Brian Glover never sought the spotlight. In 1969, he was working as a teacher in Barnsley, splitting his time between the classroom and the wrestling ring. His break into film was a stroke of luck orchestrated by Ken Loach for the movie Kes.
Glover played Mr. Sugden with a naturalness that was unsettling. He wasn't acting so much as simply projecting the gruff authority he knew firsthand. And the gamble paid off.
He was the most hated and authentic gym teacher in the history of British cinema.
From that moment on, his life was split between two opposite worlds. At night, he was Leon Arras, the man of a thousand faces in the ring. During the day, he took calls from directors who wanted that square face and that baldness that commanded respect without him having to shout.
In 1981, John Landis called him to An American Werewolf in London. Glover accepted the role of a patron at the Slaughtered Lamb pub. His physical presence was so powerful that he stole every scene he appeared in.
But his career wasn't limited to scowling. He wrote plays and television scripts because his mind was far sharper than his physique suggested. He never allowed himself to be typecast as a simple provincial brute.
His voice was a first-rate commercial asset.
For years, he voiced the characters in Tetley Tea commercials. Those cartoons connected with audiences thanks to the warm, working-class tone that Glover never wanted to lose. For him, success didn't mean changing accents; it meant getting the world to get used to his own.
In 1992, David Fincher recruited him for Alien 3. He played Harold Andrews, the warden of the space prison. The shoot was utter chaos because of constant script changes, but Glover maintained a professionalism his co-stars still remember.
In 1997, a brain tumor began to affect his movements. He kept working until his body finally gave out.
His last film appearance was in Snow White: A Tale of Terror, shot shortly before his death. He died in a London hospital on July 24, 1997, at age 63. He left behind a list of 103 acting credits.
