Peter Gene Hernandez was just four years old when he was already earning money onstage in Hawaii. This was no child's play. His parents were part of the show business, and young Peter learned the trade of survival before he could multiply. In 2003, he decided the island was too small for him and landed in Los Angeles with a thousand dollars and a suitcase.
But the industry wasn't waiting with open arms.
He signed with Motown Records and was dropped before he could record a single. That rejection drove him to take refuge in songwriting for other artists under the name The Smeezingtons. During those years of anonymity, he learned how a radio hit was made while waiting for his own chance. He wrote songs for Flo Rida and CeeLo Green before anyone knew what face went with his voice.
And the gamble paid off.
His name started to gain serious traction when he provided vocals on Nothin' on You by B.o.B and Billionaire by Travie McCoy. That happened in 2010. Suddenly, the guy who wrote songs for others had a contract with Atlantic Records and a stage name that sounded like it came from a distant planet. His debut album was titled Doo-Wops & Hooligans and sold six million copies in less than a year.
Critics discovered that Mars handled pop with mathematical precision. Behind the smile and pompadour was an obsessive producer who left nothing to chance.
In 2012, he released Unorthodox Jukebox to move away from his teen sound and embrace rock and reggae. The album featured Locked Out of Heaven and won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album. Mars controlled every detail of the production and his band's image, demanding near-military discipline at dance rehearsals for their world tours.
The whole world stopped in 2014 with Uptown Funk. The collaboration with Mark Ronson topped the sales charts for fourteen consecutive weeks. That track defined his next era with 24K Magic in 2016, where he revived the 1990s R&B sound and 1970s funk. He swept the 2018 Grammys, taking home all six awards he was nominated for.
And then he decided to disappear for a while.
In 2021, he teamed up with Anderson .Paak to form the Silk Sonic project. They recorded the album An Evening with Silk Sonic, aiming for an analog sound that captured the essence of the Motown sound he was kicked out of years earlier. They won four Grammy Awards in 2022, including Song and Record of the Year for Leave the Door Open.
In August 2024, he released the ballad Die With A Smile with Lady Gaga. The song racked up more than a billion streams on digital platforms in record time. Meanwhile, he maintained his residency at the Park MGM in Las Vegas, where his shows typically sell out months in advance.
His accumulated gambling debt at Las Vegas casinos reportedly reached millions of dollars, according to various financial reports published in 2024.
