Catherine Joy Perry spent her childhood in Soviet Latvia, where her father worked as a missionary. There she trained with the National Ballet of Latvia, developing a spartan discipline that she would later bring to every contract she signed in the United States. She wasn't chasing quick fame in movies, but she ended up finding it in a Florida ring.
In 2013, she entered WWE's developmental system under the name Lana.
Her first big break on the big screen had nothing to do with submission holds. She appeared as a dancer and singer in Pitch Perfect in 2012 and returned for the sequel in 2015. These productions allowed her to show that her training at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater was a real professional tool and not just a decorative line on her resume.
The character she played for years in front of millions of viewers was a cold construction. Perry crafted an identity that blended a Russian accent with a style of power reminiscent of Cold War villains. That chapter gave her the confidence to manage her own brand image without depending on screenwriters.
And the audience bought the story.
During her time in the professional wrestling league, she met her husband (Miroslav Barnyashev), with whom she formed one of the most profitable tag teams in sports television. Together they exploited the storyline of the foreigner versus the local hero until their professional paths parted ways in 2021. Perry used that exposure to fund her own personal projects and move away from the stigma of contact sports.
During 2016, she starred in the action movie Interrogation alongside Adam Copeland. In this project, she took a leading role that moved her away from dance choreography and into the suspense genre. Critics were not kind to the film, but Perry managed to keep the interest of B-movie producers.
After leaving professional wrestling in 2021, the actress decided to diversify her income. She took part in the reality series The Surreal Life in 2022, where she revealed a much more vulnerable side. That experience helped soften her image as an artificial woman in the eyes of casting directors in Los Angeles.
But movies remained her top priority.
In 2021, she shared the screen with Bruce Willis in the science fiction movie Cosmic Sin. Playing Sol (an weapons expert) required a different kind of physical training than she had for her televised matches. The production received negative reviews across nearly every specialized outlet and was a setback in her career.
In 2023, she made her return to All Elite Wrestling to resume her role as a manager. Her contract with the company focused on talent management and creating long-running storylines. Her last recorded appearance in a fictional production was a supporting role in a low-budget action project filmed in the state of Georgia.
