A Durban flea market in 2003 doesn’t seem like the best place to change your life. Candice Swanepoel was fifteen and helped her family on a dairy farm in Mooi River, surrounded by mud and livestock. Talent scout Kevin Ellis noticed her height and an unusually symmetrical face, enough to convince her parents to send her to Europe.

Within two years she was already walking the runway in Paris for Tommy Hilfiger and Dolce & Gabbana. But the traditional haute couture circuit was too small for her financially, so she soon went after contracts with serious advertising muscle beyond the French runways.

No one in Durban suspected such a rise.

Under the Pyrotechnics of Michael Bay

Her big break in film and video came when Victoria’s Secret signed her to its commercial division in 2007. Three years later, she signed an official Angel contract and became the face of a machine that operated on blockbuster-level budgets.

In 2010, Michael Bay directed the Christmas ad A Night of a Thousand Fantasies and put Swanepoel in front of industrial fans, helicopters, and slow-motion shots at one hundred frames per second. In 2014, they repeated the formula on the shoot for What Angels Want in Miami. It wasn’t static runway modeling but pure action work, a discipline in which every step demanded military precision under scorching hot lights.

In 2012, she tried her hand at scripted television with an episode of the series Hawaii Five-0. It was a brief appearance playing herself, but enough to show that her true magnetism lay in direct advertising.

In 2013, the label gave her the Royal Fantasy Bra, a piece of jewelry valued at ten million dollars set with more than four thousand precious gems. Swanepoel opened that year’s televised show with an armed escort through the studio hallways and a global audience of nearly ten million viewers glued to their screens.

The spotlight never forgives a hesitation.

The Business of Precision

Free-to-air television began to lose audience share, and the annual runway show fell into a creative crisis by the end of the decade. Swanepoel recognized the shift before executives canceled the broadcast.

In February 2018, she co-founded Tropic of C with Daniela Manfredi, a former creative director of lingerie. They left behind the middlemen of major distributors to sell directly to consumers online, committing to seventy percent recycled fibers made from marine waste.

And the gamble paid off perfectly.

Rather than hand creative control over to others, Swanepoel took charge of the visual direction of every photo campaign and the commercial deals with Selfridges in London. After fifteen years of twelve-hour workdays, she knew which angles flattered the garment and how to cut outdoor production costs without losing cinematic grain.

Her Return to the Global Stage

In 2023, Prime Video premiered Victoria’s Secret: The Tour ’23, a hybrid of fashion documentary and promotional feature filmed in four different cities. Swanepoel once again led the visual lineup in a format designed for on-demand viewing.

In October 2024, the company brought back its live runway show from Brooklyn after six years off television. Swanepoel opened the show in golden wings made of metallic feathers while the event was streamed in sync on video platforms and social media.

The broadcast mobilized twelve 4K cameras and a technical crew of three hundred people to pull off just three minutes of live airtime.
