Carla Juri doesn't usually ask permission to unsettle people. In 2013, critics at the Locarno Film Festival were divided over a performance that broke with Swiss neatness. That young woman with an electric gaze starred in Wetlands, and European cinema realized an actress had emerged who was willing to get her hands truly dirty.
She was born in 1985 in the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland. She grew up speaking three languages naturally, but decided her training should be nomadic. She studied in Los Angeles and London to refine a technique that avoids the dramatic artifices common in traditional schools.
And that geographic distance allowed her to build a restrained style.
Before moving into professional film, Juri played ice hockey at a competitive level. That physical discipline shows in how she moves in front of the camera, because she isn't chasing aesthetic beauty but the truth of movement. In 2012 she won the Swiss Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for 180°, and just a year later she won the award again as a lead.
But her real breakthrough came with the role of Helen Memel.
Playing a teenager obsessed with body hygiene and bodily fluids in Wetlands was professional suicide for many. For her, it was a chance to prove that modesty has no place on a serious film set. The film became a cult phenomenon, and her name began circulating in casting offices across California.
The American industry often tries to devour European talent by typecasting it in exotic villain roles. It couldn't pin Juri down. In 2016, she starred in Paula, bringing painter Paula Modersohn-Becker to life. It was a performance of complete restraint that helped clean up her image after the visual excess of her earlier projects.
Denis Villeneuve cast her in a brief but pivotal role in Blade Runner 2049 in 2017. Playing Dr. Ana Stelline required complete performance isolation. She shot nearly all of her scenes behind a safety glass barrier and with no physical contact with the rest of the cast.
It was a lesson in minimal presence.
Despite the scale of the production, she kept her residence in Europe. She has no interest in the noise of red carpets or constant exposure on social media. She prefers scripts that demand months of language preparation or changes to her daily training routine.
In 2019 she appeared in When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, directed by Caroline Link. Here she showed she can handle historical drama without falling into the sentimentality typical of the genre. Her ability to convey anguish through silence is one of the most powerful tools in her current career.
The film Six Minutes to Midnight placed her in 2020 alongside names of the caliber of Judi Dench. She didn't shrink in the face of her co-stars' experience. Because Juri sees filmmaking as a process of technical collaboration, not a hierarchy of egos.
Her work pace is deliberately slow.
In 2022, she premiered Blood, a drama directed by Bradley Rust Gray that screened at the Sundance Film Festival. The shoot took place in Japan and demanded a level of introspection that few commercial actors would accept today. The film relies almost entirely on her face and on the nuances of a sadness that needs no explanatory dialogue.
The actress continues to choose her scripts with a magnifying glass, prioritizing production design over the final budget. She lives far from the usual spotlight and keeps a very small team to manage her international contracts. The distribution deal for her latest project was closed for less than two million euros.
