Catherine Laga’Aia made international headlines in June 2024.
She was only 17 years old when Disney chose her to carry the weight of one of its most profitable franchises. She was no stranger to Sydney's arts scene, but her life changed when she took over the paddle from Vaiana in its flesh-and-blood version.
It was a calculated move by the studio.
The actress was born in Australia and has deep roots in Samoa. That detail was key for director Thomas Kail, because they wanted a real connection to the Pacific Islands. They didn't just want a pretty face who could sing in front of a green screen in a Los Angeles studio.
In her home in New South Wales, acting was never taboo. She grew up surrounded by scripts and cameras thanks to her father, Jay Laga’Aia (a veteran who worked on Star Wars and Xena: Warrior Princess). So the atmosphere on film sets was a natural extension of her own living room.
But Catherine didn't want to be limited to being the daughter of a high-profile supporting actor. She trained at local schools and took part in small projects before the call came that would change everything.
The casting process lasted months.
In 2024, she began intense physical training for location shoots and very deep water tanks. The real-life version of Vaiana demanded a stamina that the 2016 animated film did not require of its voice actors. The film's budget topped $ 150 million before the first camera rolled.
Sharing the screen with Dwayne Johnson is a massive challenge for any newcomer. The gap in experience between the two is enormous. But the chemistry in the camera tests convinced the producers that she could hold her own with Hollywood's biggest star without blinking.
And the gamble paid off in the boardrooms.
For the lead role, they were looking for someone who could genuinely represent the cultural heritage of the islands. Catherine drew on her Samoan ancestry to add nuances in language and gestures that were not in Jared Bush's original script. Seven talent agencies competed for her representation exclusively before the Disney contract was made public.
Filming was scheduled to take up much of the calendar for 2024 and 2025. The production moved to protected locations in Hawaii to capture the archipelago's natural light and avoid excessive digital effects on the landscapes.
Disney set the film's worldwide premiere for July 10, 2026.
Production wrapped its first technical phase with a crew of more than four hundred practical effects specialists.
