The debut nobody expected

At fifteen, Celine Buckens landed the role of Emilie in War Horse after just two auditions. She had no prior professional experience and ended up filming under the direction of Steven Spielberg in 2011. That entry into the British industry was a stroke of luck that few debutants manage to handle without burning out along the way.

Buckens was born in Brussels in 1996, but her career took shape entirely in London. Unlike many child actors, she decided not to trade books for the spotlight. She studied History at the London School of Economics while juggling filming and final exams. That academic background gave her a narrative restraint that shows in her later choices.

And the gamble paid off.

For years, her face was tied to big-budget youth productions. In 2017, she took on the role of Zoe in the Netflix series Free Rein. The project ran until 2019 and gave her the experience she needed to understand the pace of major streaming platforms. But Buckens was looking for something more than the teen niche.

Breaking away from the teen mold

In 2020, she played Sophie Mercer in Warrior. The martial arts series, based on the writings of Bruce Lee, demanded a much rawer physical and dramatic range. It was her first encounter with a massive production environment beyond period drama or family content. She then began selecting scripts where moral ambiguity was the central axis.

Her real critical breakthrough came in 2021 with Showtrial. Her performance as Talitha Campbell earned her a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 2022. Buckens built a character who is both irritating and magnetic. She knows that on screen, the audience's rejection is sometimes more useful than their sympathy.

Success did not change her work pace.

In 2022, she starred in The Ex-Wife for Paramount+. In this psychological thriller, she played Tasha and carried the narrative weight of a plot built on domestic suspense. British critics praised her ability to hold long close-ups without the need for explanatory dialogue. She is an actress who trusts her gaze to convey what the script leaves unsaid.

In 2023, she worked on the series The Castaways alongside Sheridan Smith. Filming took place on location in Greece and required considerable physical effort in water and jungle scenes. Buckens plays Lori in a survival story that departs from her previous work in studio dramas.

Post-production on The Castaways was completed on a budget in line with high-end British television standards. Celine Buckens lives in London and speaks French and English fluently. In 2024, her name was linked to independent production projects in Central Europe.
