Chae Soo-bin never sought the spotlight obsessively. A casting director spotted her on the street when she was a student, and that chance meeting turned her academic path toward film sets. In 2014, she appeared in the film My Dictator in a small role that was enough for the industry to notice her gaze.
Unlike other actors who spend years in acting schools before debuting, she learned the craft directly under the spotlight.
In 2016, the project that put her on the map for mainstream audiences arrived. She played Jo Ha-yeon in the historical drama Love in the Moonlight. She wasn't the lead, but her ability to carry the weight of a supporting role with complex nuances caught the attention of TV producers.
Korean television found a fresh new face.
Her pace of work sped up dramatically. In 2017, she lined up three high-profile projects: The Rebel, Strongest Deliveryman, and the romantic comedy I'm Not a Robot. The latter production is a curious case study in her career.
During the broadcast of I’m Not a Robot in 2017, ratings in South Korea were mediocre. Local critics never quite connected with a plot in which she played a woman pretending to be an android. But the international market responded differently.
The series racked up millions of views on streaming platforms outside its country of origin.
This global phenomenon helped her name appear on casting lists for projects with bigger budgets. In 2018, she starred in Where Stars Land, a drama set at Incheon Airport that performed well in terms of audience share. But she was looking to move away from overly sweet characters.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2020, she decided to take part in A Piece of Your Mind. It was a risky production with a melancholic tone that didn't suit the mass audience, and it ended up with a reduced number of episodes. That dip in ratings didn't stop her move into big-budget films.
In 2021, she made a change of pace with the Netflix movie Sweet & Sour. She played a nurse caught in a relationship falling apart under the strain of distance and exhaustion from work. It was a down-to-earth role, far from fantasy, that gave her the freedom to explore a more physical, less idealized performance.
In 2022, she joined the cast of the big-budget production The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure.
This adventure film demanded intense physical training and constant use of digital effects on set. That same year, she starred in Rookie Cops for Disney+ and The Fabulous for Netflix. Her strategy was to diversify distribution platforms so she wouldn't depend solely on traditional Korean TV networks.
In 2024, she appeared in the action movie Hijack 1971, playing a flight attendant in an extreme crisis situation.
By 2025, she is scheduled to appear in Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, one of the most ambitious film adaptations in Korean cinema, based on a massive webtoon. The budget for this production exceeds 30,000 million won per installment. Her agency, King Kong by Starship, manages her advertising contracts, which include cosmetics and technical fashion brands.
