At the end of the nineties, Columbia Pictures figured Latin music could solve its box office problem. They put a rhythmic romance on the table, signed Vanessa Williams, and looked for a male lead who could hold a two-minute shot while sweating through salsa without losing technical composure.

Elmer Figueroa Arce had been working on TV sets in San Juan, Puerto Rico, since he was ten years old. That early start in the youth group Los Chicos taught him to face the camera before he even learned to project his voice for a casting audition.

Hollywood wanted something else.

In 1998, Baila conmigo (Dance with Me) premiered under the direction of Randa Haines. The filmmaker had just scored a hit with Children of a Lesser God and wanted to film ballroom dancing with dramatic rigor, steering away from the flashy commercial style common at the time. The singer played Rafael Infante, a Cuban immigrant who ends up sweeping floors in a dance studio in Texas.

And the on-screen chemistry worked. Chayanne performed the choreography without stunt doubles in long wide shots, which cut production costs in the editing room.

But box office results cooled the studio's film ambitions. The movie cost a modest sum by American industry standards and barely earned 15.9 million dollars in North American theaters. That result abruptly ended any attempt to establish him as a leading man in California.

The Telenovela Workshop and the Unforgiving Camera

Before arriving in Los Angeles, he had gone through the grueling discipline of daily-broadcast TV dramas. In Puerto Rico and Mexico, the TV production machine of the 1980s chewed through casts at a pace of one episode per day, shot on three fixed cameras.

In 1986, he appeared in Pobre juventud and soon after headlined Tormento. These were fourteen-hour shoots where no one reshot a take over a slip of the tongue.

That's where he learned the craft.

In 1994, Puerto Rican director Jacobo Morales offered him the lead role in Linda Sara, an independent production shot on 35mm film. The movie competed at international festivals and showcased a restrained dramatic side that surprised those who knew him only from his music videos.

And when he moved to Buenos Aires in 2001 to star in the telenovela Provócame alongside Araceli González, his profile earned million-dollar syndication deals across the region. Telefe sold the serial's episodes to more than twenty countries without needing any local adaptations.

The Dubbing Refuge and the Final Numbers

Film industry came calling years later, away from the set and in front of a mic in a sound studio. Casting directors valued his breath control and sense of tempo, a skill polished over four decades of massive concerts.

Walt Disney Pictures hired him in 2010 to voice the thief Flynn Rider in the Spanish-language version of Tangled. The studio wanted the cadence of a classic rogue who could handle difficult vocal numbers without a stand-in singer on the soundtrack tracks.

In 2021, he repeated the experience for Illumination Entertainment in Sing 2 (Sing 2). He took on the role of Clay Calloway, a retired, taciturn lion whom Bono voiced in the original English version.

So his work in recording studios ended up counting for more than his presence on traditional sets. In 2023 he released his album Bailemos otra vez, and in 2024 he launched a tour that filled stadiums across the Americas.

The final tally is in the numbers.

His screen career includes seven TV serials, two commercial feature films in theaters, and more than fifty million copies sold in the international music market. The Baila conmigo profile still lists its 126-minute runtime in the Columbia Pictures catalog, with a rating stuck at 51 percent positive reviews from American critics.
