In August 2003, Alex Ferguson watched an eighteen-year-old kid tear apart his defense at José Alvalade and ordered the plane not to take off for Manchester until his contract was signed. He arrived in England decked out in blond highlights and over-the-top flashy style. He seemed like a loud supporting player from a teen movie, but he harbored a relentless drive to devour the spotlight.
Old Trafford polished the excesses of this baroque winger into a relentless goalscorer. In 2008, he lifted his first Champions League trophy and won his first Ballon d'Or after scoring 42 goals in a single season. That was no stroke of luck but the start of a choreographed discipline that turned his body into a machine of millimeter-precise accuracy.
The script called for a fascinating villain.
In July 2009, Santiago Bernabéu packed eighty thousand fans into the stands just to watch him step onto the pitch in his shorts. Florentino Pérez paid 96 million euros for the noisiest transfer of that summer. The figure was designed to shatter Barcelona's dominance under Pep Guardiola.
For nearly a decade, he built an epic rivalry against Lionel Messi that kept the world of football on edge. While the Argentine played like a silent, intuitive prodigy, the Portuguese crafted his celebrity persona with the emphatic gestures of 1980s action movie heroes. Every celebration was framed for television.
But the act worked because the numbers backed up the show. In May 2018, he closed his chapter at Real Madrid with 450 goals in 438 official appearances and four continental titles. He announced his departure on the same Kyiv pitch just minutes after lifting the trophy against Liverpool.
Nobody could stand losing as much as he did.
In 2015, director Anthony Wonke premiered the documentary Ronaldo, an authorized portrait produced by the same team behind Senna and Amy. The film sidestepped thorny conflicts and chose to focus on his loneliness in a mansion in La Finca, Madrid. We see a man eating breakfast in silence in front of a collection of luxury cars while competing with his own reflection.
The truth is, Cristiano Ronaldo never needed an outside screenwriter because he was always his own director of photography. His time at Juventus starting in 2018 aimed to prove his scoring ability in another league, at a cost of 100 million euros. He delivered the goal-scoring numbers expected of a striker in Italy, though Turin never managed to give him the European glory he was after, much to the frustration of the Piedmontese board.
So he returned to Manchester in 2021, determined to close the circle at Old Trafford. The reunion led to a head-on clash with coach Erik ten Hag and a bitter spell on the bench that didn't fit his personal script. In November 2022, he tore apart the dressing room with a scathing interview given to journalist Piers Morgan.
It was a calculated demolition.
In January 2023, he signed a commercial and sporting contract with Saudi club Al-Nassr guaranteeing close to 200 million euros a year. The move opened the financial floodgates for the Gulf country to sign dozens of veterans from European leagues.
Removed from the Champions League elite, he stayed obsessed with goal arithmetic and caring for his physique. In September 2024, he scored against Croatia his 900nd career goal in the group stage of the UEFA Nations League. He finished that match at 39 years old with 1,238 official appearances behind him.

Things you probably didn't know about Cristiano Ronaldo
I think that because I am rich, handsome and a great player people are envious of me. I don’t have any other explanation.
We don't want to tell our dreams. We want to show them.
In my mind, I'm always the best. I don't care what people think, what they say. In my mind, not just this year but always, I'm always the best.
It bothers me when it's said that Madrid is struggling because Cristiano is struggling. It feels like you are after me. If everyone was at my level, perhaps we would be in first place.
Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
I don’t see anyone better than me. No player does things that I cannot do myself, but I see things others can’t do. There’s no more complete player than me. I’m the best player in history — in the good and the bad moments.
