James Mangold received a video of an eleven-year-old girl doing acrobatics in her living room in Madrid. It was not a typical casting tape. Dafne Keen Fernández already had a handle on the professional acting craft before turning twelve, because she grew up surrounded by scripts and theater rehearsals. Her father is British actor Will Keen, and her mother is Spanish director María Fernández Ache.
In 2017, the release of Logan forced critics to learn her name overnight. She played X-23 with a physical intensity that overshadowed the veterans in the cast. But what truly won over the studio was her ability to perform complex action scenes without relying on stunt doubles for every take. She landed the role after throwing a real punch at Hugh Jackman during an improvised audition in which she mixed English and Spanish on pure instinct.
And the gamble paid off.
Before her leap to Hollywood, she had already debuted in the series The Refugees in 2014. There, she shared the screen with her father in a Bambú Producciones production for Spanish television. It was a low-budget shoot compared to what came later. But it taught her that the craft knows no geographic borders.
In 2019, she took on the responsibility of leading the adaptation of His Dark Materials for HBO and BBC. The role of Lyra Belacqua demanded a constant on-screen presence across three full seasons. Filming took place mainly in Wales and required considerable physical effort to interact with computer-generated creatures that weren't actually there.
The industry was watching her closely.
Many child actors disappear after their first big commercial hit. But Keen managed her career from Madrid, keeping a low profile in the national media. She chose to focus on finishing her education while million-dollar contracts piled up on her nightstand. In 2022, she closed out the Lyra trilogy for a global audience of more than five million viewers per episode.
Because genre cinema has always been her natural haven.
In 2024, she joined the Star Wars universe through the series The Acolyte. She played Jecki Lon (an alien padawan), which required several hours of makeup sessions every morning. She learned lightsaber combat techniques that echoed her original training in superhero movies.
That same year, she returned to her role as Laura in Deadpool & Wolverine under strict secrecy. The production forbade her from mentioning her involvement, even to her closest friends, for months. Her scenes were shot on closed sets to prevent leaks to the entertainment press. The film's budget exceeded 200 million dollars before international promotion costs.
The actress signed her representation contract with the Independent Talent Group agency in London to manage her image rights in Europe.
