A Drift Into Acting in Vancouver

Alissa Skovbye was four years old when a Cadillac casting changed her routine. It wasn't her own decision but a lucky family twist in Vancouver that put her in the spotlight before she could read a script. Her older sister Tiera was already working in the industry, and she simply followed in her footsteps with astonishing ease.

In 2009, she landed her first film role in Personal Effects. She shared the set with Michelle Pfeiffer and Ashton Kutcher when she was barely tall enough to reach the table. It was a quiet trial by fire that taught her about waiting times and the discipline of a professional set.

There was no turning back.

During 2014, she played Grace in the series Once Upon a Time. That foray into fantasy taught her how the machinery of a major network like ABC works. But the real change of pace came years later on a streaming platform looking for faces capable of carrying multigenerational dramas.

Building a Shared Character

In 2021, she premiered in Firefly Lane, bringing to life the teenage version of Tully Hart. She had to share the character's DNA with Katherine Heigl and maintain complex physical mannerisms across two full seasons. Filming officially wrapped in 2023 after 26 episodes were shot in British Columbia.

Her training has been purely hands-on and based on direct observation. Skovbye belongs to a generation of actors who grew up in Hollywood North. Vancouver is her home base, and she has shot much of her filmography there, taking advantage of the area's tax incentives.

Silence speaks volumes too.

In 2019, she appeared in The Man in the High Castle playing Annie. She is an actress who tends to avoid melodrama and prefers to work with restraint. That approach helped her land projects that demanded a maturity unusual for her age at the time.

The Demands of Period Production

In 2024, she starred in Gilded Newport Mysteries: Murder at the Breakers for the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries network. She played Emma Cross in a mystery set in Rhode Island in 1895. The late 19th-century costumes required two hours of hair styling every day before heading to set.

Over the years, her method has become highly technical. She knows that acting depends as much on emotion as on respecting light marks and camera focus. During the filming of her latest projects, she has maintained strict discipline to stay within the tone required by the art direction.

Production ran on a schedule of 15 calendar days at historic locations in Newport.
