Sherri Shepherd didn't start out in the spotlight.
In 1990, she worked as a legal secretary in Los Angeles while looking for any opening at the city's comedy clubs. It was an exhausting routine: by day she drafted legal documents, and by night she tested jokes about her own life. But that duality let her fund her first steps in the industry without depending on the whims of casting directors.
Her first real break came in 1995 with the series Cleghorne!. It didn't last long. The show was canceled after one season, but it got her into the circuit of 1990s sitcoms. She then racked up supporting roles on Suddenly Susan and The Jamie Foxx Show, where she polished the blunt style that defines her.
And the gamble paid off.
Her big break in the media came in 2007 when she joined The View as a co-host. Replacing Star Jones was no easy task on a set where political and social debates often end up as tabloid fodder. For seven years, she shared the table with Barbara Walters and Whoopi Goldberg under constant media pressure.
She won a Daytime Emmy Award in 2009 alongside her fellow panelists. But her time on the show was also full of odd moments (such as when she questioned the shape of the Earth live on air) that generated months of mockery in the press. Shepherd weathered the storm without losing her contract or the favor of her most loyal audience.
In 2014, she decided to leave the show to refocus on acting. She wanted to prove she could do more than comment on the news over a cup of coffee. She appeared in the film Precious in 2009 with a more restrained performance and had a recurring role on 30 Rock playing Angie Jordan. Her character on Tina Fey became one of critics' favorites for its parody of reality TV stars.
Controlling the content was her priority from the very first minute.
After years of supporting roles in films such as Ride Along in 2014 and Brian Banks in 2018, the industry handed her the keys to her own show. In 2022, the talk show Sherri premiered, filling the slot Wendy Williams left on television. It was more than a hosting gig, as she also worked as an executive producer through her company, Jaba Finless Productions.
The production of her talk show secured its renewal through 2025 after posting steady ratings among women aged 25 to 54. In 2024, the show reached 500 episodes aired, keeping a fixed structure of an opening monologue and celebrity interviews. Ad spending on her program grew 15% during its second season on air.
