Maggie Wheeler auditioned for Friends hoping to play Monica Geller.
She didn't land the lead. But the show's producers kept her contact for a small role in episode five of the first season.
Her appearance as Janice was originally planned for just one night.
The actress unilaterally decided that her character needed a laugh reminiscent of a dolphin in distress or a hyena with asthma. That creative decision extended her contract for ten years and made her the only supporting character to appear in every season of the show.
The reality is that Wheeler had already spent years working in the New York industry before she unleashed her first nasal laugh on television.
Born in Manhattan as Margaret Jakobson, her early career steps had nothing to do with sitcoms. In 1986 she voiced several characters in the animated series SilverHawks.
That voice-over experience was key. Wheeler understood that the voice is a physical tool just as powerful as the face or the hands.
And she proved it soon after.
In 1989 she appeared in New Year's Day, an independent film in which she shared scenes with David Duchovny. At the time, the two were in a romantic relationship that ended before he rose to fame with The X-Files.
Despite her gift for drama, the market wanted her for roles where comedic timing was the absolute priority. So she ended up landing one project after another on the biggest networks in the United States.
Before she found success with her nervous laugh, Wheeler shot the pilot of Seinfeld. She played Cynthia, a friend of Elaine's who goes on a disastrous date with George Costanza.
But the script didn't account for her staying on. So Maggie kept looking for openings in big-budget productions such as Tú a Londres y yo a California in 1998, where she played one of the camp counselors.
The industry tends to typecast those with such a distinctive style.
To avoid getting stuck, Wheeler diversified her career away from Hollywood cameras. In 2005 she co-founded the Golden Bridge Chorus in Los Angeles, an organization dedicated to teaching community singing and choral music.
This role as a choir director allowed her to keep an emotional stability that many of her generation's peers lost along the way. Her musical training was what saved her mental health after the big comedies of the nineties came to an end.
In 2019 she lent her voice to the animated version of The Addams Family, playing Trudy Pickering. Her vocal range remains her greatest financial asset decades after her beginnings.
During the filming of the Friends: The Reunion special in 2021, the actress confirmed that she never rehearsed Janice's laugh before that first audition in 1994. It came about naturally as she worked to keep up with Matthew Perry's comedic energy during rehearsals.
Wheeler lives in Los Angeles and remains actively involved in vocal music workshops she leads in person across the United States. The base pay for a guest actor in a union production in 2024 is around $1,100 per workday.
