Don Stark is more than just the guy with the impossible sideburns and the open shirt. Before stepping onto a TV set in California, he spent years sweating in gyms in New York. He won bodybuilding and martial arts competitions in his youth.
That muscle mass opened the doors to B-movie action productions in the 1980s. In 1986, he landed a supporting role in Peggy Sue Got Married under the direction of Francis Ford Coppola. But his real break didn't depend on brute strength; it depended on his talent for controlled absurdity.
His physique always had the final say in his contracts.
In 1998, he joined the cast of That '70s Show to play Bob Pinciotti. His initial contract covered only a few episodes, but his chemistry with the rest of the cast kept him on screen for all eight seasons. Stark understood that his character worked best the more pathetic he seemed next to his wife and daughter.
And it worked like a charm.
He drew on his martial arts training to portray the body language of a man who always seems out of place in his own home. Because behind the barbecue jokes was an actor who controlled every technical gesture. In 1994, he voiced the villain Rhino in the animated Spider-Man series, using a deep, gravelly vocal range.
Stark never stopped working on low-budget projects after the sitcom ended in 2006. He appeared in shows such as Castle and The Mentalist, playing characters who leaned into his tough-guy neighborhood vibe. In 2018, he had a brief appearance in Green Book, playing an Italian mobster in a dry, direct way.
He was paid to appear in specific episodes of the sequel That '90s Show, which premiered in 2023. The script cast him as a grandfather who keeps living stuck in an era that no longer exists. Stark shot his scenes at the same Netflix studios where the original Forman kitchen set was rebuilt.
But the industry was not always generous with his personal projects.
He tried to produce several original scripts that never made it to pre-production due to a lack of private financing. In 2024, he took part in the independent comedy Holiday Twist, shot entirely on location in Los Angeles. The film had a limited release in commercial theaters before going straight to digital rental platforms.
Stark turned seventy in 2024 and has kept the same agent for two decades.
