Kirk Douglas arrived in Israel in 1953 to shoot Lonely Are the Brave. There, he spotted a ten-year-old girl with a gaze that cut right through the lens.
That little girl was Daliah Lavi.
Douglas was so impressed that he decided to fund her dance studies in Stockholm. But fate had other plans, because her height and somewhat fragile health steered her away from professional ballet and straight toward European film sets.
She debuted early and with force.
In 1960, she took part in the German production Im Weißen Rößl. It wasn't long before she caught the attention of directors looking for a beauty who was hard to pigeonhole, with an impressive gift for adapting to languages.
Mario Bava cast her as the lead in La frusta e il corpo in 1963. In this gothic horror film, she shared the screen with Christopher Lee and showed she could carry the weight of an oppressive atmosphere without batting an eye.
That shoot in Italy opened the door to major international co-productions. So in 1965, she got her big break in Hollywood with Lord Jim. Richard Brooks cast her opposite Peter O’Toole in an ambitious adaptation aimed at mass success.
The film was not the box office hit that had been expected.
But Lavi had already made her mark with the major studios. That's how she ended up playing Agent Detainer in the James Bond spoof Casino Royale in 1967. The role put her alongside stars like Woody Allen and Orson Welles in a creative chaos that is now considered a cult classic.
By the late sixties, her interest in acting had started to fade. Film demanded a level of exposure that never quite fit with her private life, and the scripts she was receiving were becoming repetitive.
In 1970, she decided to try her luck in the German music industry. She recorded Oh, wann kommst du?, and the song shot to the top of the sales charts within a few weeks.
Her first singles sold more than a million copies.
German audiences embraced her as one of their favorite voices in the schlager genre. Her songs spoke of love and melancholy with a deep voice that contrasted with the lightness of the melodies of the era. And although many thought it was a passing whim, she maintained her musical success for more than fifteen years.
She officially retired from the stage in 1995 after decades of tours and constant recording.
She settled in Asheville, North Carolina, seeking the peace that Europe no longer offered her. There she lived away from the spotlight with her fourth husband, devoting herself entirely to her family.
Her last notable public appearance was in 2009 on a German television program, where she said goodbye to her most loyal fans. Daliah Lavi died on May 3, 2017 at the age of 74 from natural causes.
