David Selby arrived in New York with a doctorate in theater and little money in his pockets. In 1968, he was offered the role of Quentin Collins in the series Dark Shadows. It was no ordinary job, since the character didn't even speak at first. He was a silent ghost who eventually saved the audience of the ABC network.
Late-1960s television was not used to that kind of murky magnetism.
Selby did not want to be a poster heartthrob. But the fan frenzy followed him for years. In 1971, he shot the film Night of Dark Shadows and decided it was time to return to the stage so he wouldn't get stuck in the horror genre. So he went back to regional theater before Hollywood came calling again.
In 1982, the industry called him to join the cast of Falcon Crest. He would play Richard Channing. He was supposed to be the ruthless antagonist of Angela Channing, but Selby gave him a vulnerability that caught the writers off guard. The audience began to sympathize with the illegitimate son who was looking for approval.
And the gamble paid off.
For eight seasons and 209 episodes, the actor pulled the strings of the most lavish television drama of the era. He won several Soap Opera Digest Awards and earned salaries that seem unreal today for a supporting actor turned lead. But he never stopped writing poetry between takes at the California vineyards.
After the series ended in 1990, Selby stepped away from the Hollywood spotlight. He preferred to focus on his work as a playwright and memoirist. He published books such as My Mother's Garden and A Better Place, in which he explored his roots in West Virginia.
Film still didn't forget him. In 2010, David Fincher cast him in a brief but pivotal role in The Social Network, playing the lawyer for the Winklevoss twins. It proved that his physical presence remained intact decades after his peak years on television.
In 2012, he appeared in the film version of Dark Shadows directed by Tim Burton. It was a nod to longtime fans. He did not have a leading role, but his appearance helped bridge the franchise's move to the big screen.
Her work pace never slowed down.
In 2021, he worked on the series Tell Me Your Secrets, playing Saul Barlow. At 80 years old, he kept a busy schedule with podcast recordings and dramatic readings. The series was filmed entirely in Louisiana with a budget of several million dollars per episode.
