Deborah Kerr never screamed on screen. Her strength lay in a restraint that Hollywood studios exploited endlessly to sell the image of an untouchable British lady. But behind that porcelain skin and boarding-school manners was an actress who negotiated her contracts with the precision of a surgeon.
And it worked for decades.
In 1947, she arrived in the United States preceded by the success of Black Narcissus. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was looking for a replacement for Greer Garson, and they believed they had found the perfect mold of passive elegance in this redheaded Scotswoman. In that studio system, actresses were chess pieces, and she was assigned the role of the distant queen.
In 1953, the image of the perfect lady was shattered. Deborah Kerr insisted on playing Karen Holmes in From Here to Eternity and had to fight the idea that she was only good for tea parties and pastries. She cut her hair, dyed it blonde, and filmed that beach scene in Hawaii with Burt Lancaster, which is still studied in editing schools today.
It was her greatest act of rebellion.
Still, the industry is fickle when it comes to awards. Despite starring in An Affair to Remember in 1957 alongside Cary Grant, a film that earns millions every time it airs on television, the statuette always slipped away at the last moment. So she became the eternal nominee while her co-stars went up on stage to collect their six Oscar nominations.
In 1969, she decided she had had enough of the Los Angeles spotlight. She appeared in The Proposition under the direction of Elia Kazan, then stepped away from mainstream movies to focus on the theater and her private life in Europe. She settled in Switzerland and spent long stretches at her home in Marbella with screenwriter Peter Viertel.
She never missed the noise of the red carpet.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tried to make up for overlooking her in 1994 by presenting her with an honorary award. It was one of her last public appearances before Parkinson's began to limit her movements. Deborah Kerr died on October 16, 2007 in Suffolk, England, at the age of 86.
