Formative years in the heart of London

Eline Powell was born in Leuven in 1990 under the name Eline Pauwels. Her father founded a major biotechnology company, but she chose to steer clear of laboratories and study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. There, she shared classrooms with actors who now dominate international box offices.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2011, she landed her first professional role in a short film titled For Elsie. It was a low-key start that helped her understand how the British industry works. Powell quickly learned that in this line of work, silence and observation are worth more than any rehearsed speech.

The School of Invisible Secondary Characters

Dustin Hoffman was selected in 2012 to appear in Quartet. That experience alongside Maggie Smith shaped the way she moved on a professional film set. Powell played Angelique in a story about aging and music that received positive reviews at European festivals.

She appeared in Private Peaceful that same year. It was a period drama in which her look fit the aesthetic standards of British historical films, despite her Belgian roots.

In 2016, it was time for Game of Thrones. She played Bianca in three episodes of the sixth season as part of a theater troupe in Braavos. That role gave her the chance to work alongside Maisie Williams and get a firsthand look at the logistics of an HBO megaproduction.

The Risk of Impossible Creatures

In 2017, the Freeform network was looking for an actress who could humanize a marine predator. Powell auditioned for Siren with a physical approach that bordered on the animalistic. She studied the movements of great apes and various aquatic mammals to build the character of Ryn.

Filming in British Columbia required spending hours underwater in freezing temperatures to achieve the realism the producers were after.

The series premiered in 2018 and ran for three seasons. Powell carried the weight of a storyline that blended environmentalism with fantasy suspense. Her gaze and her ability to communicate without lengthy dialogue were the pillars of the project until its cancellation in 2020.

In 2017, she also had a brief appearance in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword directed by Guy Ritchie. She played one of the three mermaids who appear in the cave. Her look seemed to fit perfectly with the mythological folklore that major Hollywood studios were looking for at the time.

New Worlds and a Return to Fantasy

After wrapping her run as a sea creature in 2020, the actress sought projects with a more down-to-earth grounding. She appeared in the third season of Alex Rider in 2024, playing Syl. It was a necessary change of pace, moving away from the prosthetics and heavy makeup that defined her earlier years on television.

Netflix announced her casting in The Witcher in 2024 to play Nimue. This character comes from Andrzej Sapkowski's original mythology and appears in the show's fourth season. Filming for these episodes stretched across much of that year in various locations throughout Central Europe.

The fourth season's production had a massive budget in an effort to maintain the franchise's visual quality after the departure of its original lead.

Powell lives in London and keeps a low profile in the media. She prefers to let her work speak for itself and chooses scripts that break away from convention. In 2024, her name was linked to several independent film projects that have yet to receive a commercial release date.
