Elyes Gabel

Its Roots in British Television

Elyes Gabel was born in Westminster in 1983. Raised between London and Canada, a biographical detail that explains his ease at shedding any regional accent in front of the camera. His first real break came with the medical series Casualty, where he played Dr. Guppy Sandhu for three straight years.

It was a crash course in television survival with more than 120 episodes under its belt.

In 2011, he appeared in the first season of Game of Thrones in the role of Rakharo. That Dothraki rider role was brief but helped casting directors in Los Angeles add his name to the list of candidates with international potential. The American industry quickly noticed that his features allowed for an ethnic ambiguity that was very useful for action thrillers.

The Era of Big Productions

He appeared in World War Z in 2013 alongside Brad Pitt. Those were the years when Gabel was landing supporting roles in blockbusters that needed faces able to project authority and conflict. He accepted the role of Adam in Body of Proof as a strategy to understand how the American network television system works.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2014, he took the lead role in Scorpion. He played Walter O'Brien, an eccentric genius who led a team of experts solving global high-tech crises. The series ran for four seasons on CBS and gave him a financial security that few actors of his profile manage to hold on to.

But massive success in commercial television often wears down the creative patience of actors trained in theater. After Scorpion ended in 2018, he decided to step away from shoots with 22 episodes per season in search of projects with a less industrial production pace.

The Shift Toward Psychological Suspense

He sought out characters with a different dramatic weight (such as his brief but intense appearance in A Most Violent Year by J.C. Chandor). In 2022, he returned to suspense with Suspicion for Apple TV+. Here he shared the screen with Uma Thurman in a story about international kidnappings and corporate identity mix-ups.

Critics praised her ability to carry the weight of suspicion without falling back on the usual tics of traditional action heroes. Her performance as Sean Tilson in this British production confirmed that her main interest now lies in the thriller with complex characters.

Beyond the sets, Gabel devotes much of his time to composing music under the stage name Gabel. In 2024, he filmed several episodes of FBI, playing Special Agent Hassan Ali. The filming of these scenes took place on location in New York City under the technical supervision of Rick Eid.
