Emma Booth started earning money before the age of fourteen. She did it by walking the runways in Perth and Tokyo while her classmates were still deciding which subjects to take the following year.
But modeling was only a means to an end.
The industry soon labeled her the new face of Australia. She chose to break her contract with the Chic agency to make her own way on film sets where no one would tell her not to eat. In 2007, she shot Clubland, and that job earned her an Australian Film Institute award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
And the gamble paid off.
That role as Jill opened the doors of Hollywood to her right away. She didn't need years of empty auditions in Los Angeles, because her name was already on the desks of the most influential casting directors of the era.
Most actors avoid roles that force them to live with moral misery for months. Booth did the opposite in 2016 with Hounds of Love. She played Evelyn White, a woman complicit in the kidnappings and murders committed by her husband in Australia in the 1980s.
The shoot was a psychological hell.
She lost weight alarmingly for the role. She isolated herself from the rest of the crew during the weeks of filming to maintain the suffocating tension that leaps off the screen in every shot. International critics compared her work to the rawest performances in modern psychological horror.
It was a necessary turning point. From then on, the American market stopped seeing her as the blonde with perfect features and started treating her as a character actress capable of carrying dark projects.
In 2017, she joined the cast of Once Upon a Time to play the villain Mother Gothel. It was a smart move that brought her into millions of viewers' homes without giving up her Australian identity. But her biggest success on the small screen came with Glitch.
In this fantasy series shot between 2015 and 2019, she played a woman who returns from the dead. The project was sold to global streaming platforms. That gave her the financial stability to be much more selective about her film scripts.
In 2020, she starred in The Gloaming, a crime series set in Tasmania with icy cinematography. The show's tone recalled Nordic noir, and Booth carried the full dramatic weight of the police plot.
The film industry tends to penalize actresses over thirty, but she has gotten past that hurdle through total diversification.
In 2023, she took part in Devil's Peak alongside Billy Bob Thornton and Robin Wright. The film was shot in the Appalachian Mountains on a tight budget by the standards of major American studios. Filming of her scenes was completed in less than three weeks of actual shooting time.
