Eric Close isn't the kind of actor who seeks loud applause on the red carpets of Los Angeles. His face is associated with the efficiency of the high-end supporting player or with the lead who carries the weight of a procedural plot without breaking a sweat. In 1992 he landed his first major role in the series Sisters. It marked the start of a career firmly rooted in American television that has yet to reach its peak.
It wasn't all easy at first.
In 1996, he starred in Dark Skies. The production tried to replicate the paranormal phenomenon, but audiences did not respond the way NBC had hoped. It was a hard blow. But Close learned early that in the entertainment industry, persistence is worth more than a flash of glory.
His big break came in 2002 with Without a Trace. Playing Martin Fitzgerald gave him a global profile that few actors of his stature achieve. Over seven seasons and 160 episodes, he maintained a steady acting rhythm. Nearly 19 million viewers followed the series at its peak in the United States.
And his salary rose accordingly.
After the FBI office closed in 2009, the actor avoided being typecast. He appeared in Suits playing Travis Tanner (an aggressive lawyer who got under the lead character's skin). This phase showed that Close could move away from his honest-guy image and explore more cynical territory. Before accepting the role, he asked that the character have a competitive sports background.
In 2012, he moved to Tennessee to shoot Nashville. There he brought Teddy Conrad to life over 68 episodes. What makes this project interesting is more than his on-screen performance. In 2013, he made his directorial debut with the episode titled She’s Got You. It was a smart move. Directing gave him a level of control that acting often denies those who aren't on Hollywood's A-list.
The market changed, and Close adapted to the new demands of cable television.
In 2019, he became closely linked with the Hallmark studio. He directed and starred in Christmas at Graceland: Home for the Holidays. This isn't cinema chasing awards at European film festivals. It's an industry that generates hundreds of millions of dollars every year, and Close understood the business before many of his generation's peers did. In 2022, he led the cast of the movie The Mulligan under the direction of Michael Carriere.
The production of The Mulligan had an estimated budget of 3 million dollars.
