Farah Zeynep Abdullah didn't break into the Turkish industry through the usual modeling agency route. She was studying theater and French at the University of Kent when a vacation trip to Istanbul in 2010 led to a casting call for the series Öyle Bir Geçer Zaman Ki.
Chance took care of the rest.
Instead of returning to England to finish her studies, she decided to stay and take on the role of Aylin. But what seemed like an easy debut turned into a physical and emotional challenge that forced her to grow up in front of millions of viewers. And she did it without having first trained at any local acting schools.
In 2013, she starred in Kelebeğin Rüyası under the direction of Yılmaz Erdoğan. It was her first encounter with auteur cinema, and there she realized her profile fit better with projects carrying dramatic weight than with light comedies. So she began screening her scripts with an unusual level of strictness for someone just starting out.
Her role in Masumlar Apartmanı during 2020 created friction with the television work system. The actress decided to leave the series earlier than planned because of the mental toll the character of Inci took on her. For her, psychological well-being came before the million-dollar contracts of free-to-air television.
Not everyone understood her decision to leave.
But that decision allowed her to focus on the project that would change her standing in the industry. The film Bergen shifted the hierarchy of Turkish cinema because Farah didn't just play the ill-fated singer. In 2022, she got fully involved in production to make sure the story didn't slip into sensationalism. She invested her own money and supervised the final edit to avoid the traditional victim angle.
The box office result was a financial earthquake. In 2022, the film grossed more than 160 million Turkish lira and became one of the most-watched titles of the decade in its country. But success did not pin her down to a single genre.
In 2023, she took on the challenge of Bihter for Amazon Prime Video. She reinterpreted a Turkish literary classic from a much rawer and less melodramatic angle than previous adaptations. She also faced criticism from more conservative sectors that didn't look kindly on her take on the character.
The bet paid off in international markets.
Her Bosnian, Iraqi and Turkish roots give her an identity that defies rigid national labels. She speaks fluent English and keeps a careful distance from the gossip press in Istanbul. She prefers to talk about women's rights or animal protection rather than her private life.
The production of Bihter was shot entirely with large-format cameras and anamorphic lenses to achieve a superior cinematic look. The film's final budget exceeded the usual standards of local streaming productions.
