Farrokh Bulsara arrived in London in 1964, fleeing political violence in Zanzibar at seventeen with a modest suitcase. He had no contacts in the music industry. But he had four extra incisors in his upper jaw, which made him self-conscious and gave him an unusually resonant anatomical voice box.

Before stepping onto a professional stage, he attended the art school at Ealing Technical College and School of Art. There he learned graphic composition and technical illustration, two disciplines that later shaped his approach to live shows as staged productions rather than simple rock concerts.

In 1970, he founded Queen with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, and bassist John Deacon joined shortly after. Mercury came up with the band's name, designed the group's crest with zodiac references, and insisted on spending money they didn't yet have on white satin and black velvet stage costumes.

The plan was risky.

Graphic Design Before the Stadium

At the end of 1975, the band recorded A Night at the Opera at a cost of nearly 40,000 pounds sterling, an exorbitant figure for the time that pushed EMI executives to the brink of a nervous breakdown. The album's fourth track was Bohemian Rhapsody, a nearly six-minute piece with no chorus that radio stations considered unfit for the charts.

To avoid the grind of television studios, Mercury hired director Bruce Gowers. They shot the promo video in four hours inside Elstree Studios, using a prism lens to multiply the band members' faces against a dark background. It cost 4,500 pounds and established the music video as a commercial tool before music television arrived.

Mercury was drawn to the visual scale of opera. He therefore brought the theater's overhead lighting to his arena tours in the United States during the second half of the 1970s, mixing piano ballads like Somebody to Love with choral numbers built to thunder through concrete stands.

Munich, synthesizers and the solo escape

At the start of the 1980s, Mercury cut his hair, grew a mustache and moved much of his routine to Germany. At Musicland Studios in Munich, he experimented with drum machines and synthetic bass patterns alongside producer Reinhold Mack, moving away from the dense guitar sound that defined his band.

From that period came his first solo album, Mr. Bad Guy, released in 1985 under a multimillion-dollar contract with CBS Records. Its reception in stores was cold compared with Queen's usual sales, but that sonic detour helped him gauge his independence outside the band.

That was pure theater.

On July 13, 1985, the band took the stage at Wembley Stadium for the Live Aid charity concert. The organizers gave them a twenty-minute slot in the mid-afternoon, with no sound checks and no sets, competing against solo artists who had spent weeks promoting their appearances.

Mercury sat down at the grand piano, played the opening chords of Bohemian Rhapsody, and got 72,000 attendees singing along with improvised vocal exercises. Those 21 minutes on stage multiplied the band's sales across its entire previous catalog within weeks.

In 1988, he released the album Barcelona with soprano Montserrat Caballé, an orchestral work produced between Townhouse Studios in London and Mountain Studios in Montreux. The title track was selected for the 1992 Olympic Games, although the singer did not live to see the opening ceremony.

The Final Reels in Montreux

After his AIDS diagnosis in 1987, Mercury chose to withdraw to Switzerland to record as much vocal material as his health would allow. He refused interviews with the British press and had the Garden Lodge home in London surrounded by high walls and private guards.

During the sessions for the album Innuendo in 1990, he recorded while leaning on the mixing desk to keep his balance. Brian May wrote The Show Must Go On for him, doubting whether his lungs could still reach the high notes, but Mercury downed a glass of vodka and nailed the final take on the first try.

On May 30, 1991, he stood in front of a camera for the last time for the video of These Are the Days of Our Lives, with Rudi Dolezal and Hannes Rossacher directing. The crew filmed in 35 millimeter black and white with soft lighting to disguise the musician's physical decline, and he closed the shot looking directly into the lens.

Mercury died on November 24, 1991, at age 45, at his Kensington home from bronchopneumonia linked to his illness. In 2018, the film Bohemian Rhapsody earned more than 910 million dollars at the international box office, and in 2024, Sony Music acquired the publishing rights and original recordings of Queen for 1,000 million pounds.

Trivia about Freddie Mercury

Things you probably didn't know about Freddie Mercury

At the age of 12, he formed his first band at school, The Hectics, in which he played piano and sang.
Freddie Mercury suggested the name "Queen" for the band, despite the initial reservations of his future bandmates.
Queen recorded "Bohemian Rhapsody" using 180 overdubs on a 16-track machine, an extraordinary number for mid-1970s technology.
The song "Love of My Life" was written for Mary Austin, with whom he had a relationship for years and to whom he left a significant part of his estate.
Mercury performed with Queen at approximately 700 concerts over the course of his career.
All four members of Queen wrote at least one song for the band that reached number one on the charts.
Before finding success with Queen, he briefly played in the band Wreckage and also auditioned unsuccessfully for Sour Milk Sea.
His parents belonged to the Parsi community, of Persian and Indian descent, and Mercury practiced Zoroastrianism for part of his life.

Quotes by Freddie Mercury

  • It all began with the three wise men, followed a star took them to Bethelehem, and made it heard throughout the land — born was the leader of man. All going down to see the Lord Jesus.
  • We’re confident people will take to us, because although the camp image has already been established by people like Bowie and Bolan we are taking it to another level. The concept of Queen is to be regal and majestic. Glamour is part of us and we want to be dandy. We want to shock and be outrageous instantly.
  • I hate pockets in trousers … By the way, I do not wear a hose. My hose is my own. No coke bottle, nothing stuffed down there.
  • Jimi Hendrix is very important. He's my idol. He sort of epitomizes, from his presentation on stage, the whole works of a rock star. There's no way you can compare him. You either have the magic or you don't. There's no way you can work up to it. There's nobody who can take his place.
  • Liza, in terms of sheer talent, just oozes with it. She has sheer energy and stamina, which she gets across the stage, and the way she delivers herself to the public is a good influence. There is a lot to learn from her
  • Led Zeppelin is the greatest. Robert Plant is one of the most original vocalists of our time. As a rock band they deserve the kind of success they're getting.
