Roger Taylor understood before anyone else that film was the lifeline that would let Queen's music survive the decades. He didn't limit himself to pounding the drums in packed stadiums. By 1980 he was already in editing rooms supervising how the synthesizers of Flash Gordon fit with Dino De Laurentiis's images.
That first contact with the Hollywood industry taught him that creative control was non-negotiable. That is why Taylor became a fierce producer who would rather cancel a shoot than film a lie. In 2010 a biopic about his band was little more than a script drifting through dark offices.
And the gamble paid off.
Eight years of tense meetings and director changes passed until Bohemian Rhapsody hit theaters in 2018. Taylor didn't just put up the money. He monitored every editing session to make sure the drum rhythm matched the narrative pulse of the story. The result was four Academy Awards and worldwide box office earnings of over $900 million.
His relationship with film always had a point of technical friction. In 1986 he was actively involved in creating the sound atmosphere of Highlander. It wasn't just another job for easy money. Taylor insisted that the music be a character in the plot rather than mere background decoration.
But massive success did not dampen his desire to experiment with smaller formats. In 2011 he produced the documentary Queen: Days of Our Lives for the BBC. There he showed that he knew when to step away from the camera and let the historical archive speak for itself. He sought not personal glory but factual precision.
The industry respects him for his ability to say no.
He turned down dozens of scripts that tried to turn his band's story into a parody of excess. Because Taylor knows that in film, silence is just as important as noise. So he focused on supervising the sound edits of concert films that were distributed in theaters across half the planet.
Everyone wanted a piece of the pie.
In 2023 he oversaw the technical remastering of audio tapes for large-format film productions. His obsession with digital sound quality led him to work with top-tier engineers in London. The final figure of his fortune tied to film production rights remains a well-kept secret in UK records.
