Gingle Wang didn't start in front of a camera. At 15 years old, she published her first novel, Barbie, under the pen name Han-Han. She wrote it to process her parents' divorce while studying in the United States. The book became a bestseller in Taiwan and indirectly opened the doors of the industry for her.
She never set out to be an actress.
Her debut came in 2017 with All Because of Love. The real turning point came in 2019. Her role in Detention, the adaptation of the psychological horror video game, put her on the radar of international film festivals. She earned her first Best Actress nomination at the Golden Horse Awards at just 21 years old. The film grossed more than NT$250 million.
In 2021, she shot The Falls under the direction of Chung Mong-hong. It is a suffocating drama about mental health during lockdown. The shoot was tough because the chemistry with Alyssa Chia had to be tense and distant. International critics noticed her ability to hold three-minute close-ups without blinking.
That year, the industry labeled her the face of the new Taiwanese cinema. But she preferred to break the mold of serious drama.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2023, she appeared in Marry My Dead Body. The film blended supernatural comedy with police action. She played Lin Tzu-ching, a police officer who breaks away from the fragile image she had carried from earlier projects. The film became the highest-grossing movie of the year in Taiwan and performed strongly on global streaming platforms.
Wang keeps a careful distance from fame. In 2024 she premiered Dead Talents Society, a horror comedy in which she plays a rookie ghost trying to become famous in the afterlife. The production budget exceeded NT$250 million. It is one of the highest figures for the genre on the island.
Before filming, she reads the script looking for cracks in the characters. She has no interest in flat roles. That's why in 2024 she also took part in the series The Believers, exploring the dynamics of pyramid schemes and the cult of personality.
Her contract for 2025 includes two live-action productions and a voice-dubbing project. She has no plans to write novels again in the short term. She prefers that others write the stories she has to bring to life on camera. Filming of her latest movie in 2024 lasted exactly 62 days.
