Ruby Lin signed her first advertising contract at seventeen without telling her parents. She made up an excuse about the death of an aunt to skip class and film a jasmine tea commercial with Aaron Kwok. That teenage lie earned her a slap at home, but it also launched one of the most profitable careers in Asian entertainment.
Taiwanese television in the late nineties was looking for faces that could cry gracefully on camera. Lin fit the bill. In 1998, she accepted the role of Xia Ziwei in the period drama My Fair Princess. The series reached audience shares of 65% in mainland China and turned her into an overnight mass phenomenon.
It was an explosion of fame that nobody on her team knew how to manage at first.
The industry quickly typecast her as the long-suffering, kind-hearted woman. But she understood that physical beauty has an expiration date in contracts with major networks. Before turning thirty, she began studying how budgets and logistics work on film sets.
Any actress in her position would have kept stacking advertising deals and comfortable supporting roles. But Lin decided she didn't want to depend on scripts that others turned down. In 2009, she founded Ruby Lin Studio to take full control of her projects and her public image.
Her first major bet as a producer was The Glamorous Imperial Concubine in 2011. She invested much of her personal savings in a production that many considered too ambitious for a first-time producer. The gamble paid off, as the series was sold to more than twenty countries before editing was even finished.
And the gamble paid off.
The financial success of her production company allowed her to choose stories with more psychological depth. In 2014, she produced and starred in The Way We Were. The series won Best TV Series at the Golden Bell Awards and proved her ability to spot stories that resonated with a more mature, demanding audience.
Time tends to be cruel to actresses in the Chinese industry if they don't know how to reinvent themselves. Lin avoided being forgotten by specializing in thrillers and urban dramas with a darker tone. In 2017, she produced the film The Devotion of Suspect X and proved that her name attached to a project guaranteed box office success.
In 2021, she led the cast of Light the Night for Netflix. The story was set in Japanese-style nightclubs in Taipei during the 1980s. The production cost about ten million dollars and was split into three seasons that dominated the ratings for months across Asia.
Unlike other stars who hide their private lives to avoid losing contracts, Lin married actor Wallace Huo in 2016 in a ceremony in Bali. The local press speculated about an early retirement that never happened. Her work pace didn't slow down after motherhood either.
In 2023, she took part in the reality show Light the Wild to expand the intellectual property of her flagship series into other commercial formats. During the shoot of Copycat Killer in 2023, she played a news anchor with a coolness far removed from her melancholy beginnings. The postproduction budget for her recent works typically sets aside 15% of the total for digital color grading.
