In February 2010, Guillermo de Gales took the stage at the Royal Opera House in London to become president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). He was not looking for an honorary ornament for his lapel. He was taking over directly from Richard Attenborough, a legendary figure who had led the institution with an iron hand for decades.
For much of the industry, the handover stirred some courtly suspicion. But the heir knew the codes of the camera better than many studio directors. After the media persecution his mother endured in 1997, he learned the hard way how visual storytelling works in public space.
And the move paid off perfectly.
In 2013, he opened the expansion of Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the headquarters where the Harry Potter saga was filmed. There, he pressed Treasury representatives to protect tax incentives for productions shooting on British soil. Thanks to that effort, more than seventy international productions signed filming contracts in England during that first cycle.
Guillermo de Gales knows the technical side of commercial sets firsthand. In 2016, he visited the set of Star Wars: The Last Jedi at Pinewood Studios with his brother Enrique. The costume department dressed both of them in regulation Imperial soldier armor to shoot a cameo in the corridors of a galactic cruiser.
Director Rian Johnson cut the shot in the editing room because the princes' height broke the camera framing with the rest of the group. Few heirs to a European crown have seen their scene in a multimillion-dollar franchise tossed onto the cutting-room floor without a single complaint.
In May 2022, he led the red carpet at Leicester Square for the premiere of Top Gun: Maverick alongside Tom Cruise, who organized a private screening beforehand after learning of Guillermo's past as a rescue pilot. The theatrical campaign brought in fifty million pounds at the UK box office in its opening weekend and gave a much-needed boost to cinema chains after months of losses.
Nobody was showering praise on him at the European box office.
His greatest impact in audiovisual media comes not from black-tie galas but from social documentaries. In 2020, he backed the feature Football, Prince William and Our Mental Health alongside BBC One, a sober film focused on dismantling male emotional repression in professional sports.
In front of the camera, he chose natural lighting and set aside palace pomp to listen to testimonies from amateur soccer players struck by suicide. As a result, the audience witnessed a conversation free of hierarchy.
In 2021, he extended that format to the environment with the series The Earthshot Prize: Repairing Our Planet, co-directed by David Attenborough and distributed by Discovery. The shoot required moving crews to fourteen countries under strict minimum-emissions standards and local contracts in every photography department.
Television drama didn't escape his attention either. In 2023, the sixth season of The Crown brought his university years at St Andrews to the screen, with Ed McVey in the role. Guillermo kept a tight-lipped silence about Peter Morgan's script and declined to comment to the press.
In fiscal year 2025, his BAFTA scholarship program closed with an audited total of 1.8 million British pounds, distributed directly among 42 independent animation and auteur film projects.

Things you probably didn't know about Guillermo de Gales
Of course, Harry and I are both quite upset about it - that our mother's trust has been betrayed and even now she is still being exploited.
I'm not an expert. I've been reliably informed it's a sapphire with some diamonds. But I'm sure everyone recognises it from previous times.
My plans aren't quite solid. I'm hugely disorganized, you see, so once I sort it out you'll probably find out.
I think at first they were a bit surprised that it had happened, then they realised it was really nice and it was good fun and we got on really well, they were good friends of ours as well so we had a good giggle with them as well.
I was just talking with friends and they said it was good idea and I just sort of liked the idea.
It made a real big difference with everyone not trying to sort of snap a picture every time I was walking around the streets. I hope it just continues for Harry as well when he is there.
