Henry Lau entered the entertainment industry in 2006 after standing out in a massive audition in Toronto. He was no ordinary aspiring artist, since his classical violin and piano training gave him an unusual technical edge in manufactured pop.
In 2008 he joined Super Junior-M, and the public response was aggressive. A section of Korean fans rejected his arrival with physical protests on the streets of Seoul. Those protesters demanded that the original lineup remain intact.
It was a period of quiet resistance.
But Lau decided to focus on music production and on perfecting his command of several languages. In 2013 he released his first solo work, titled Trap, and critics changed their minds. The music video racked up millions of views in just a few hours and proved his ability to carry a project without the backing of a large band.
His big break in international film came in 2019 with A Dog’s Journey. The Amblin Entertainment production marked his entry into Hollywood and temporarily forced him to relocate. He did it without giving up his work as a composer.
The Chinese industry welcomed him with open arms.
During 2020, he starred in the epic fantasy film Double World. Filming was physically and technically demanding due to the heavy use of digital effects and combat choreography. The film was distributed worldwide through digital platforms and hit No. 1 in several Asian markets during its first week.
In 2018, he decided to break away from his longtime agency and founded Monster Entertainment Group. This move allowed him to control his image rights and choose his film projects with complete freedom. Lau was looking to move away from the standard contracts that limit artists' creativity in Asia.
In 2021, he appeared in the series Dramaworld, playing a character who parodied the tropes of Korean dramas. It was a self-aware exercise that went down well with cable TV audiences. But his real interest remained in composing soundtracks and executive producing.
His participation in 2024 in the musical project for The Double reaffirmed his status as a valuable asset for transmedia content producers. He manages his career with a small team structure and fast decision-making processes.
The budget for his last technical tour in 2023 closed with a profit margin of 22% after deducting international logistics costs.
