Jack Champion went through the casting process for James Cameron when he was only twelve years old. Four months of intense auditions determined that he would play Spider in the Avatar franchise. But filming was not a fleeting summer experience. The actor spent much of his teenage years in New Zealand shooting the saga's sequels simultaneously.
It was an extreme physical challenge.
He spent years training in freediving and weightlifting to fit into an environment where almost everything was digital. During that time, the young actor had to redo takes because his body was changing too fast due to puberty. Cameron had to shoot his real action scenes before Champion's growth broke visual continuity with the Pandora characters.
In 2017, his official signing was announced.
That long-term commitment to Disney didn't stop him from exploring more down-to-earth genres. In 2023 he played Ethan Landry in Scream VI. It was a necessary change of pace to move away from his image as a feral jungle kid. Filming in Montreal allowed him to work in a traditional slasher horror setting, far from water tanks and motion sensors.
And it worked better than expected.
That same year he appeared in Retribution alongside Liam Neeson. In this action thriller, Champion plays the son of an executive under pressure in a car loaded with explosives. Filming took place mainly in Berlin in 2021, although its theatrical release was delayed until 2023 due to scheduling adjustments.
The industry often forgets that Champion filmed his scenes for Avatar: The Way of Water years before audiences saw a single frame. In 2019, he finished the bulk of his physical work for the second and third films. This meant that when the movie hit theaters in 2022, the actor was already an eighteen-year-old adult who had little in common with the child on screen.
That timing disconnect is a key factor in his professional career.
Champion is one of the few actors who has experienced being a global star while still being an unknown at his high school in Virginia. His training didn't take place in conventional drama schools but under the direct supervision of camera engineers and cinematographers working on budgets of more than 250 million dollars.
In 2025, the actor is scheduled to premiere Everything's Going to Be Great. In this project directed by Bill Hader, he shares the screen with Bryan Cranston. It's a production that aims for a more intimate, dramatic tone compared with the sci-fi blockbusters that dominated the early years of his contract.
But the big milestone of 2025 is his joining TRON: Ares.
Filming for this third installment of the Disney saga began in Vancouver in early 2024. Champion joins a cast led by Jared Leto in a story that expands the universe of the Na'vi. The shoot used virtual production volume technology similar to that used on the Star Wars series.
The film features a production design based on the original aesthetic of 1982.
