Jaden Smith made his on-screen debut at age eight. In 2006, he played Christopher in The Pursuit of Happyness, and audiences saw a kid who didn't need to fake his chemistry with his father. That performance earned him an MTV Movie Award but also put him under a spotlight that has never fully faded.
But critics warmed to him fast. In 2010, he starred in the remake of The Karate Kid alongside Jackie Chan in Beijing. He spent months training in martial arts for a role that demanded a level of physical strain unusual for a twelve-year-old. The film grossed more than $350 million worldwide.
The industry viewed him with suspicion because of his privileged upbringing.
But the massive success of his childhood years came to an abrupt halt. In 2013, he starred in After Earth under the direction of M. Night Shyamalan, and the result was a box office disaster that hurt his reputation. The press piled on the production's lack of charisma, and the young actor decided to step away from the major Hollywood studios to explore other forms of expression.
Film became an option rather than an obligation. Smith started recording demos in his home studio and in 2017 released his first studio album, titled Syre. It was an experimental hip hop project that took three years to produce and had nothing to do with commercial radio formulas.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2016, he starred in the Netflix series The Get Down, created by Baz Luhrmann. His role as Marcus Dizzee Kipling let him explore graffiti culture in the Bronx in the 1970s. It was one of the most expensive productions in television history, and Smith used the shoot to soak up the visual aesthetic he would later bring to his own clothing brand.
His interest in fashion was no rich teenager's whim. In 2016, he became the first man to front a women's clothing campaign for Louis Vuitton. That decision broke industry norms in luxury fashion and put the spotlight on his views about gender fluidity in clothing.
Smith founded the collective MSFTSrep with his sister Willow in 2012. What started as a group of friends interested in science and art became a fashion label with a presence on the runways of Paris. Their designs often include references to quantum physics and existential philosophy.
Jaden Smith stopped being an actor and became a brand.
In 2020, he filmed the romantic drama Life in a Year alongside Cara Delevingne. For this role, he had to cut off his signature dreadlocks in a scene that his own father filmed and posted on social media. The movie was released directly on digital platforms and confirmed his interest in more intimate stories that rely less on special effects.
In 2024, his business activities centered on expanding JUST Water, a bottled water company packaged in cardboard that he founded to reduce plastic use. The company's valuation surpassed 100 million dollars after its latest international funding round.
