Jessica Dinnage doesn't physically appear in most of the film that put her on the international map. In 2018, her voice was enough to carry the tension of The Guilty (Den skyldige), a thriller that unfolds entirely inside an emergency call center. That invisible performance earned her the Robert Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Before that breakthrough, she completed her studies at the Danish National School of Performing Arts in 2016. She started with straightforward roles in local productions that aimed for an almost documentary naturalism. But it was her ability to convey anguish without relying on her face that won over the European industry.
She just needed to be heard.
In 2018, she joined the cast of The Rain. It was Netflix's first original Danish series, and her character Lea provided a human counterpoint in a post-apocalyptic science fiction setting. The series ran for three seasons and ended its broadcast in 2020.
But television work didn't pull her away from arthouse cinema in Copenhagen. By 2017, she had already been part of A Horrible Woman, a film that sparked intense debate about modern relationships. The script was designed to make audiences uncomfortable, and she took on the challenge without hesitation.
Because Jessica Dinnage prefers complex characters who don't seek the viewer's easy sympathy, her professional choices tend to move away from the conventional.
In 2022, she starred in Unruly (Ustyrlig). The story is set at the Sprogø institution in the 1930s, where women considered antisocial or promiscuous were sent by the state. Her performance as Maren required immense physical and emotional effort that critics described as devastating.
She won the Bodil Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for this performance in 2023. The jury praised how she carried the weight of a historical injustice through a gaze full of restrained rage. No big technical tricks were needed to win over audiences.
Silence is her greatest tool.
In 2024, she worked on The Quiet Ones (De lydløse). It is an action drama based on the largest robbery ever committed on Danish soil. The film recreates the real events of 2008 with a focus on logistics and human behavior under extreme pressure.
The production of this feature film had a budget of 42 million Danish kroner.
