Jessica McNamee didn't need a lucky break to get out of Australia. In 2007, she joined the cast of Home and Away and soon became part of millions of viewers' routines with Packed to the Rafters. It was a fast-track learning stage in which television worked like a meat grinder.
That series on the Seven Network gave her the confidence she needed to pack up her life. In 2012, she appeared in The Vow as the sister of Rachel McAdams. Sharing the screen with Channing Tatum taught her the rules of Los Angeles (rules that had little to do with the Sydney industry).
She moved away with no return ticket.
But the road to big contracts was not a straight line. For years, she alternated supporting roles in thrillers with brief appearances in American series. In 2017, she got the chance to play tennis player Margaret Court in Battle of the Sexes. It was a restrained role that demanded absolute physical rigidity.
On screen, she had to face the presence of Emma Stone. That performance opened the doors to major studio productions because it proved she could carry the weight of a dramatic narrative without missing a beat.
McNamee always had a close bond with sports, and that ended up defining her professional profile. In 2018, she filmed The Meg alongside Jason Statham. The movie grossed more than $530 million worldwide and put her on the radar of casting directors looking for talent for action films.
And audiences responded at the box office.
In 2021, she took on the role of Sonya Blade in the reboot of Mortal Kombat. It wasn't just kicking at a green screen in a studio. Filming took place in Australia during 2019 and required a military-style training program lasting several months to limit the use of stunt doubles in the fight choreography.
Because in this kind of production, credibility depends on the actor's ability not to blink in front of the camera. The movie premiered at a time of uncertainty for theaters but managed to top the viewing charts on digital platforms.
In 2022, she starred in The Visitor. It was a foray into psychological horror produced by Blumhouse that strengthened her position in the American market. The story followed a man who discovers his own face in an old painting, and she played the wife trying to keep her sanity in a hostile environment.
During 2024, she worked on the sequel to Mortal Kombat, reprising her role as a soldier. The production team moved to various locations across Australia to take advantage of the local government's tax incentives and the technical infrastructure of Village Roadshow studios.
Her career has always moved between the security of her home country and the demands of global franchises. She hasn't chased constant media attention, but she has managed to keep a steady flow of work in an industry that often forgets names quickly.
The production of this second installment of the fighting franchise had an estimated budget of $150 million.
