Jia Ling wasn't looking for magazine covers when she started out on the comedy circuit in Beijing. Her territory was xiangsheng, a traditional art of comic dialogue where women barely had a place in the early 2000s. In 2003, she won a national contest in this genre and beat out figures who would later become her mentors. But the reward wasn't money.
During that period, she lived in rooms without heating and sold her walkman to afford food. That hardship forged a blunt style that connected with China's working class. Her time on national television in 2010 gave her visibility, but she wanted control over her own stories. So in 2016 she founded her own production company to stop being just the supporting actress who told jokes about her looks.
No one in the industry expected a TV comedian to take over the global box office.
In 2021, she premiered Hi, Mom. The film was born as a tribute to her mother, who died in an accident when Jia was 19 years old. The screenplay adapted an earlier sketch in which she traveled back in time to meet her mother as a young woman and try to give her a better life. It became a massive phenomenon that earned more than $840 million worldwide.
The success of 2021 made her the director with the highest box office gross for a single film up to that point. But Jia Ling chose to step out of the public eye for a full year. It wasn't a spiritual retreat. She was preparing her next technical and physical move for the shoot of YOLO in 2024.
And the change was radical.
For this film, an adaptation of the Japanese movie 100 Yen Love, the director had to gain twenty kilos and then lose fifty through real boxing training. In 2024, the conversation in China was not just about the film's quality but about the discipline of a woman who refused to use digital effects to show her transformation. The movie isn't about beauty. It's about learning to love yourself through extreme physical effort.
Sony Pictures acquired the international distribution rights to YOLO before its major release. It was an unusual business move for a dramedy of Asian origin. The film topped the box office during the 2024 Chinese New Year with earnings of more than $400 million in its first few weeks.
But money doesn't seem to be her only driving force.
Jia Ling runs a closed production structure, overseeing everything from editing to promotion on social media. In 2024, her name was linked to executive producing projects for new comedy talent in her country. Her working method avoids the major traditional studios and favors small, trusted crews. The distribution of YOLO in the United States and Europe wrapped up with a final box office of 498 million dollars in the global market.
