Jiro Manio was nine years old when Maryo J. de los Reyes decided he would be the face of Magnifico. At that Manila casting, they weren't looking for a typical child star but for someone capable of understanding death without having experienced it.
In 2003, the film hit theaters and its impact was sharp. Manio played a boy who builds the coffin for his sick grandmother. That performance earned him the Silver Bear...
He was the youngest actor in history to win the Gawad Urian award.
That early success didn't come for free. The Philippine film industry often devours its child prodigies at an alarming pace, and Manio was no exception, despite his natural talent for social drama.
In 2007, he worked under Brillante Mendoza in Foster Child. His ability to blend into environments of extreme poverty kept him at the technical top of the industry for five years. But his personal stability was starting to crack off the film sets.
Reality outdid fiction in the rawest way possible. In 2015, a security guard found Manio wandering around Ninoy Aquino International Airport. He had been living there for four days (broke and in dirty clothes).
He didn't remember who he was or why people wanted to take photos with him. Images of the former star barefoot among the airport terminals went viral around the world. The system had let go of his hand long before that incident.
Actress Ai-Ai delas Alas covered the costs of his rehabilitation in 2016. It was a slow, fragmented process, marked by relapses into substance use. As a result, film became a hazy memory while he tried to rebuild his basic sense of self.
The industry quietly turned its back on him.
In 2020, he began volunteering at a drug addiction treatment center. He tried to channel his experience into helping other young people who had gone through the same self-destructive process. But financial problems never fully went away.
In January 2024, the actor made a decision that hurt nostalgic fans of Asian cinema. He sold his Gawad Urian trophy to collector Boss Toyo for 75,000 Philippine pesos. He needed the cash to cover daily expenses and accumulated debts.
Prestige doesn't pay the bills.
The transaction was recorded for a YouTube show and featured a 31-year-old man who talked about his past as if it had happened to someone else. There was no trace of bitterness in his words during the price negotiation.
He currently lives in Bataan province, far from the spotlight of Manila. His most recent on-screen work in a production profile is recorded in a local archive for a minor television appearance. The sale contract for the trophy was signed on January 2, 2024.
