John Payne was born in Virginia in 1912 and grew up in a family that lost nearly everything after the 29 crash. Before becoming an actor, he was a boxer and radio singer in New York, but his square jaw and six-foot-three frame quickly pushed him toward Hollywood. In 1940, he signed a contract with 20th Century Fox to be the male counterpart to stars like Alice Faye or Betty Grable in musical comedies that now look like they came straight from an old postcard.
And it worked.
For nearly a decade, he was the friendly face of Technicolor movies. In 1947, he played attorney Fred Gailey in Miracle on 34th Street, and that perfect-neighbor role earned him his definitive worldwide fame. But Payne was fed up with dance routines and toothpaste smiles.
Payne wanted something else.
In the early fifties, he broke his contract with the studio to seek grittier, more violent stories. He teamed up with directors like Phil Karlson and starred in film noirs that are now style guides in their own right. In 1952, he filmed The Man Who Cheated Himself, and a year later 99 River Street, in which he played a bitter, violent cab driver that had nothing to do with his musical beginnings.
There was no turning back.
He was one of the first actors to understand that the real money was behind the cameras. In 1957, he produced and starred in the series The Restless Gun after buying the rights to a radio episode of James Stewart. He earned a fortune thanks to his business vision and total control over his television projects.
But his luck turned in 1961 when a car hit him in New York, causing serious injuries to his face and legs. He spent months recovering, and although he returned to acting in one-off projects, such as an episode of Columbo in 1975, his workload dropped sharply. He turned to investing in real estate and to living far from the spotlight of an industry that had typecast him as a simple studio puppet.
He died of heart failure on December 6, 1989, at his home in Malibu.
