The Replacement Who Didn't Ask Permission

Josh Groban arrived at the Grammy rehearsals in 1999 with the panic of a teenager who still didn't know what to do with his voice. David Foster called him in to fill the gap left by Andrea Bocelli in a duet with Celine Dion. He was 17 years old.

At first Groban refused to step onto the stage out of sheer terror. But Foster insisted, and that afternoon ended with a thunderous standing ovation from the crew. That rehearsal derailed his plans to study musical theater at Carnegie Mellon University.

The industry had just struck gold.

His self-titled debut album hit stores in 2001 and went double platinum within just a few months. Critics didn't know where to put him (too young for opera and too classical for the pop of the day). That ambiguity is precisely what allowed him to sell over 25 million records over the following decade.

His baritone range didn't fit the radio sound of the late nineties.

In 2003, the release of Closer confirmed that his success wasn't a marketing accident. The album sold 375,000 copies in its first week and stayed near the top of the Billboard charts for months. And it did so without chasing the synthetic production trends that dominated the turn of the century.

The Leap onto the Glass Stage

Groban always wanted to act. In 2001, he appeared in Ally McBeal playing a young man left behind at his high school prom. The role was brief, but the audience's reaction led the writers to write a second episode for him.

But his real trial by fire didn't come on television. In 2016, he took the lead role in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812. He had to learn to play the accordion and piano live while carrying a dense plot based on Tolstoy.

Broadway was the logical refuge.

That performance earned him a Tony nomination and changed how casting directors saw him. He was no longer just the guy who sang sentimental ballads. He was an actor capable of carrying a large-scale production through eight shows a week.

In 2018, Netflix signed him to star in The Good Cop alongside Tony Danza. The series lasted only one season, but it showed a more restrained, subdued Groban. Humor has always been an underused tool in his public persona.

The Discipline of a Baritone

Groban has managed his schedule strictly to protect his voice. In 2023, he returned to Broadway to lead the revival of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The demands of the role written by Stephen Sondheim are among the highest in the English-language repertoire.

And the bet paid off at the box office.

The production of 2023 brought in more than a million dollars a week steadily. Groban played the murderous barber with a mix of rage and technical precision that moved far away from his gentler work. It was a risky decision that kept him out of the recording studio for over a year.

In the 2023 staging of Sweeney Todd, the orchestration budget allowed for 26 musicians in the pit at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.
