The Mutant Who Never Existed

Josh Helman arrived on the set of X-Men: Days of Future Past with a different idea in mind. In 2013, the initial plan was for him to play Juggernaut (a brute-force villain), but a last-minute script rewrite eliminated the character. The production decided to keep the actor and assigned him the role of a young William Stryker.

It was a risky bet that paid off.

The Australian actor doesn't have the physique of an 1980s bodybuilder. But his cold stare and almost military restraint convinced Bryan Singer to hand him the keys to one of the franchise's most important villains. He reprised the role in 2016 in X-Men: Apocalypse.

George Miller is a director who doesn't hand out praise easily. In 2015 he called Helman to join the madness of Mad Max: Fury Road. He had to shave his head and spend hours in makeup to become Slit, one of the War Boys who wanted to die on the highway.

Filming in the desert lasted months.

And his relationship with Miller did not end there. In 2024, he returned to the same universe for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. This time he played Scrotus (Immortan Joe's son) and achieved the feat of playing two different characters in the same saga. Few supporting actors can boast such trust from an author of Miller's stature.

The Australian rite of passage

Before Hollywood's explosions, he came up through Australian television. In 2007, he appeared in Home and Away. It is the series where nearly every actor from his country learns the craft through fast shoots and tight budgets. But his big break came in 2010 with The Pacific.

HBO invested $200 million in that war production. Helman played Lew Juergens and proved he could hold his own in a blockbuster alongside Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. So the move to Los Angeles was the logical next step.

Acting in front of the spotlight isn't all he's done.

In 2017, he decided that acting was not enough. He directed Kate Can't Swim on a minuscule budget with a crew of friends. The film was shot in just 12 days and made its way onto the American independent film festival circuit.

In 2023, he was part of the cast of Sound of Freedom. The movie grossed more than $250 million worldwide on a budget of just $14 million. His cumulative filmography through 2024 includes more than thirty professional projects across film and television.
