In 1999, Juan Esteban Aristizábal slept on the floor of a borrowed apartment in Los Angeles and pawned his guitar to pay the weekly rent. He was twenty-seven years old, with a disbanded band behind him and ten cassette demos that kept getting rejected by record labels in California.
In the 1980s, Medellín was a trench. In that context, he founded Ekhymosis in 1987. They played heavy metal because the environment demanded decibels to drown out the sound of drug trafficking gunfire.
That youthful rage lasted exactly one decade.
But the band model had run its course. In 1998, the group closed its books without a penny in the bank, and the musician bought a one-way ticket to the United States with a backpack and cassette tapes.
Producer Gustavo Santaolalla heard the tracks in 2000 and realized Colombian folk could engage in conversation with sharp guitars. At that crossroads, they recorded Fíjate bien.
Nobody expected the formula to work outside the alternative music scene.
His big break with a mainstream audience came with Un día normal in 2002. The album sold over two million copies in its first twenty-four months and kept him on nonstop world tours.
Then came Mi sangre in 2004. The massive spread of La camisa negra sparked outrageous controversy in Europe, political accusations in Italy and outright bans on several radio stations.
And the industry's momentum demanded even more fuel. Between 2007 and 2011, he churned out rushed recordings, clashed head-on with his management team, and wore down his vocal cords to the point that he nearly ended up in the operating room.
In 2011, he suddenly canceled a world tour due to physical and mental exhaustion.
The break lasted a little more than a year.
Over the years he learned to manage his public exposure. In 2021 he released Origen, and in 2023 he published Vida cotidiana, two recordings in which he dropped synthesizers to capture full takes with musicians playing live in the studio.
Film offers had been tempting him for a while. In 2017, he voiced a character in the animated film Ferdinand and wrote pieces for Disney projects, but dramatic fiction was a territory he approached with caution.
Until in 2024 director Andrés Baiz convinced him to head into the desert of La Guajira. In the feature film Pimpinero: Sangre y Gasolina, he played Moisés, the eldest brother of a family dedicated to smuggling fuel between Colombia and Venezuela.
He shot scenes at forty degrees Celsius under the Caribbean sun, without relying on stunt performers for the risky scenes involving trucks loaded with flammable barrels.
This is how he broke the myth of the untouchable singer.
In September 2024, the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and closed distribution deals in 240 countries, with a technical budget that exceeded eight million dollars.
