Kat Dovey knows the devil is in the details because she spent years making sure no one moved a cup from one spot to another between takes. Her time as a script supervisor on British productions gave her complete control over the internal narrative of a scene. She is not the typical director who arrives with artistic pretensions without knowing how a film is put together from the inside.

Technique was always her armor.

In 2021, she worked on the series The Outlaws alongside Stephen Merchant. There she refined the mix of dry humor and tension that she would later bring to her own projects. But it was in 2022, with The Baby, that her name began to make real noise in the offices of HBO and Sky. Directing a horror comedy about a killer baby takes a steady hand that few in today's industry have.

And the gamble paid off.

Shooting The Baby was a logistical challenge because of child protection laws and the use of practical effects on set. Dovey managed the production with an efficiency that caught the attention of major international platforms. For her, film is all about pieces that fit together with precision.

The Leap to Large Scale

In 2023, Amazon Prime Video entrusted her with key episodes of The Power. On this series, she explored a much more ambitious visual scale and moved away from British kitchen-sink drama into global science fiction. She managed budgets of several million dollars per episode without losing focus on character development.

Her style steers clear of unnecessary fireworks. She prefers an invisible camera and lets the weight fall on the rhythm of pure editing. Before filming, she already has the editing plan in her head to avoid unnecessary wasted takes in post-production.

But her training is not only technical. She studied at the National Film and Television School (NFTS) in the United Kingdom, one of Europe's most demanding institutions. There she learned that a director is, above all, a manager of egos and dead time. On her sets, no time is wasted on arguments that could have been settled in pre-production.

Precision is her personal signature.

In 2024, her schedule filled up with development projects for independent television and screenplay consulting in London. Her production company, Dovey Films, keeps a minimal structure of three permanent staff to reduce the operating costs of each project. The final budget of her last short film before moving into series barely exceeded 15,000 British pounds.
