The Toll of Linear Television

Kat Graham wasn't born waiting for a break sitting in a café in Los Angeles. She came into the world in Geneva in 1989, and by the time she turned six she was already in front of the cameras filming commercials for cereal and dolls. Her family moved around the world with a flexibility that allowed her to learn five languages before she was old enough to drive.

In 2009, the contract arrived that would change her bank account but also her creative freedom. Her role as Bonnie Bennett in The Vampire Diaries kept her tied to a shoot in Atlanta for eight consecutive seasons. That meant more than 170 episodes where she learned the technical ins and outs of mass-market television.

Graham never wanted to be just the witch in a teen series.

While her castmates used breaks to rest, she locked herself in the recording studio. In 2012, she released her first EP, titled Against the Wall, aiming for a funk sound that moved away from the sugary image of the CW network. But the music industry is treacherous, and commercial results didn't always match her early sonic ambitions.

Independence as a business model

Her push for total independence also began to pay off beyond television sets. In 2015, she released the album Roxbury Drive under a production structure she controlled from start to finish. She didn't aim to sound like Spanish or American radio hits, because she preferred to keep the intellectual property of her masters.

Her film career has been a mix of strategic decisions and pure survival. In 2017, she played Jada Pinkett in the Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez on Me. It was a physically demanding role that finally moved her away from the fantasy image that made her a global star.

Control over her own image is her main obsession.

In 2018, she starred in the sci-fi thriller How It Ends for Netflix, alongside Forest Whitaker. The movie performed well in viewing numbers but received chilly reviews for its pacing. Graham didn't seem too bothered, because that same year she was already voicing characters in the animated series Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The Leap to Biopics and Production

Her acting maturity has come through seeking roles that require a profound aesthetic transformation. In 2022, she shot Love in the Villa in Verona, trying her luck in more conventional romantic comedy. It was a light project that helped finance her aspirations as an executive producer of independent content.

She is set to star in Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua, with its release scheduled for 2025. In the film, she takes on the challenge of playing Diana Ross on the big screen. It is a supporting role, but one with a specific weight that is necessary to understand the evolution of Black music in the United States over the last century.

She knows the studio system is a meat grinder.

That is why she has diversified her income through her work as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador for years. It isn't an empty PR role, because she personally oversees aid projects in refugee camps in Africa and the Middle East. Her contract with the UN agency is one of the few constants in her professional schedule outside the spotlight.

In 2024, she signed several distribution deals for animated projects that she develops herself through her production company. Her office currently manages the image and copyright rights of three vegan cosmetics brands that operate in the international market. Filming of her latest action movie was completed in eighteen days on a budget of less than five million dollars.
