Katy Louise Saunders was born in London in 1984, but her film identity belongs to the Mediterranean. She made her debut at eighteen in Un viaggio chiamato amore, playing the young version of Sibilla Aleramo. It was a low-key start under the direction of Michele Placido that barely hinted at what was to come.
In 2004, she played Babi in Tre metri sopra il cielo. The impact at the box office in Italy and Spain was massive. Saunders became the face of Federico Moccia's heroine and inspired an entire generation of teenagers to buy padlocks to seal promises on the bridges of Rome.
Then came the Moccia phenomenon.
She reprised the role in 2007 in the sequel Ho voglia di te. However, the Italian industry tends to typecast its young talents in fast-paced romantic films. Saunders tried to break that mold by taking on genre projects such as the miniseries Il Grande Torino or the historical drama The Borgias in 2011.
In 2013, she joined the cast of Third Person under the direction of Paul Haggis. She shared scenes with Liam Neeson and Mila Kunis in an ensemble drama that sought awards prestige. She played Gina in a story weaving together three love stories in different cities, but the film did not get the critical support it had hoped for.
And fame isn't always comfortable.
After that stage, her on-screen appearances became more selective and spaced out. She appeared in the action film The Scorpion King: Book of Souls in 2018, playing Amina. It was a direct-to-video production for the domestic market that prioritized physical action over complex storytelling.
Before stepping away from the European spotlight, Saunders kept a low profile in the media. She was never a regular on the red carpet or a fixture in the Italian gossip press. Her education at Bocconi University in Milan always hinted at an interest in business beyond pure acting.
In January 2023, her name made global headlines again, but not for a film release. South Korean actor Song Joong-ki announced their marriage and confirmed that they were expecting their first child. The couple met while filming the series Vincenzo, where she helped the actor with his Italian dialogue.
However, Saunders chose not to resume her active career in front of the cameras right away.
In June 2023, she gave birth to her son in Rome. The actress settled between Seoul and the Italian capital, avoiding promotional interviews and aggressive advertising contracts. Her last credited role in the industry was a supporting part in Welcome Home, filmed in 2018.
The actress manages her personal assets away from the traditional talent agencies of London or Los Angeles. As of 2024, her film work is limited to image rights from her earlier projects and occasional script consulting. The distribution deal for her first Italian films continues to generate revenue on European streaming platforms.
