Kim Tae-hyung

The visual storytelling of a baritone

Kim Tae-hyung understands the camera in a way few artists of their generation manage to decode. In 2016 they made their debut in the series Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth, delivering a restrained performance that is rare in period dramas. They weren't seeking personal spotlight, yet their character became the most memorable dramatic turning point of the season. That experience shaped their relationship with visual storytelling forever.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2023, they decided that their first solo album, titled Layover, would not feature the frenetic beats that dominate global charts. They worked with creative director Min Hee-jin to design an aesthetic inspired by classic cinema and the analog photography of the 1970s. The album avoids heavy synthesizers and favors the saxophone because their baritone voice fits the lower register better. Sold more than two million copies in its first week of release.

But music was always the core.

His style steers away from flashy spectacle in favor of a more restrained performance. That's why European audiences started following his work beyond the traditional fan frenzy. In 2023, he also appeared on the program Jinny's Kitchen, filmed in Mexico, where he showed a much more down-to-earth side, far from the stage spotlight.

The technical silence and the horizon of 2025

In December 2023, they enlisted in South Korea's mandatory military service. This pause did not stop their work, as they had left recorded material well in advance. In March 2024, the single Fri(end)s was released, a pop soul track they recorded before putting on the uniform. The music video works like a short fiction film exploring different parallel realities.

The industry is waiting for their return in the second half of 2025.

Managed to chart three songs at the same time on the Billboard Global 200 without a conventional promotional tour. His communication strategy is built on precisely timed releases and a carefully crafted aesthetic on social media. Because Kim Tae-hyung prefers the impact of a well-composed still image over the constant noise of mass advertising.

His contract with the agency Big Hit Music was renewed in September 2023 under strictly confidential terms. Training with the military police special unit in Chuncheon will end on June 10, 2025. That day marks the end of a period of creative silence that has lasted exactly 547 days.
