IU

Lee Ji-eun hit the Cannes red carpet in 2022 under a name that no longer needed an introduction. She walked alongside Hirokazu Kore-eda to present Broker. Photographers shouted her stage name, IU, while she kept a professional distance that few expected from a pop star.

But her story didn't start with international flashbulbs or standing ovations in France.

In 2008, she debuted with the album Lost and Found, and the public barely noticed. It was a quiet start that nearly ended her aspirations before she turned sixteen. The Seoul industry is a meat grinder for teenagers, and she came close to becoming another name forgotten.

But in 2010, everything changed with a high note held for three seconds. The song Good Day launched her into commercial stardom. Despite the noise of the sales charts, she was already looking for a way into visual storytelling and control over her own image.

The weight of silence on screen

Television was where she learned to measure her silences. In 2011, she took part in Dream High and proved she could carry a storyline without relying on her voice. She wasn't looking for easy roles or likable characters to please advertising brands.

In 2018, he accepted the role of Lee Ji-an in My Mister. It was a risky decision.

She played a woman suffocated by debt and loneliness. Korean critics stopped seeing her as a singer who acts and began treating her as a method actress. Her tired, makeup-free face in that series broke with the polished look that television demands of women in Asia.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2019, she starred in Hotel del Luna. It was a massive ratings hit in which she played a woman trapped in time for a thousand years. The costumes were over the top, but her restrained performance kept the character from becoming a caricature. That's when she decided to make the definitive leap into prestige cinema.

2022's Maturity and Auteur Cinema

The shoot for Broker in 2022 changed the way she understood the industry. Kore-eda chose her after seeing her on television and gave her a script centered on abandonment. She brought a technical coolness that contrasted with the warmth of the Japanese director.

Twelve minutes of applause greeted the film after its premiere at the Palais des Festivals. IU didn't let the media noise sway her and kept working on low-profile projects that preserved her creative independence.

In 2023, she starred in Dream alongside Park Seo-joon. The film followed a soccer team made up of homeless people. It was a project that demanded months of training and precise physical coordination with actors who weren't part of the commercial circuit.

It was a physically demanding shoot.

By 2024, she had filmed the series When Life Gives You Tangerines, set on Jeju Island. The budget for this Netflix production was estimated at about 500 million won per episode. The figure reflects the drawing power of an artist who manages her own career through Edam Entertainment.
