The Risk of Not Fitting the Mold

Lee Joon-gi arrived in Seoul with just over three hundred euros in his pocket and a determination that bordered on recklessness. He worked in kitchens and clearing tables while auditioning for hundreds of roles, where he was systematically turned down because of his features. Casting directors in the early 2000s were looking for square jaws and rugged guys.

He didn't fit the beauty standards of the time.

In 2005, everything changed with The King and the Clown. That role as Gong-gil forced him to portray a fragile femininity that confused both audiences and critics. The film brought in astronomical box office numbers for an independent production, and the actor went from struggling to absolute fame in just a few weeks.

But the pretty-boy label weighed on him too heavily. So he decided to break away from his own image in 2007 with Time Between Dog and Wolf. In this project, he refused to use stunt doubles for the risky scenes and began his obsession with integrating martial arts into his acting.

And the gamble paid off.

Before filming every action scene, he prefers to rehearse the choreography until the movement becomes purely mechanical. This discipline helped him rack up hits such as Iljimae in 2008, where the physical demands were so intense that he ended up needing medical attention for exhaustion. Audiences began to see him as an athlete who could also act.

The Body as a Precision Tool

His training in Taekwondo, Hapkido and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu allowed him to skip stunt doubles on almost all of his later shoots. During the production of Joseon Gunman in 2014, he insisted that the fight scenes be shot in long takes so audiences could see that it was him taking the hits. Physical realism became his technical priority over the aesthetics of the frame.

In 2016, he starred in Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. Although the audience in South Korea was modest at first, the series had a massive impact on digital platforms across the Asian continent. This project established his name in foreign markets, but he kept looking for celebrities with darker psychological edges.

Commercial success never seemed enough to him to justify a flat script.

In 2020, he reached a different level of precision with Flower of Evil. Playing a man who fakes emotions for years required him to exercise meticulous control over his facial micro-expressions. Critics praised his ability to sustain tension without relying on big dramatic gestures or the overacting common to the genre.

Maturity in Front of the Camera

In 2022 he returned with Again My Life, playing a prosecutor who gets a second chance after being murdered. The shoot stretched over several months under strict health and safety measures. The series managed to hold a audience share above ten percent in its original time slot.

In 2023 he took on the challenge of replacing the original lead in the second season of Arthdal Chronicles: The Sword of Aramun. Playing two twin characters with opposite personalities meant doubling his shooting hours and time in the makeup chair. The production had a budget of around 37 million euros for this epic fantasy installment.

His contracts for the international promotion of his work usually include strict clauses about his daily physical training off set. The actor has followed a diet that has excluded processed carbs for more than seven years in order to maintain the agility his fight scenes demand.
