Kang Mi-na was born in Icheon in 1999, and her first public appearance was not on a film set but in a television studio surrounded by a hundred other hopefuls. She joined the group I.O.I after finishing ninth on Produce 101 in 2016. This music chapter was short-lived, but it helped the industry notice her ability to hold the camera's attention.
In 2017, she made her acting debut in the series 20th Century Boy and Girl, playing the younger version of the lead character. It was a small role, but it helped her realize her future lay not in group choreography but in building individual characters.
And the gamble paid off.
In the years that followed, she balanced her work with Gugudan alongside constant television appearances. In 2018, she starred in the web drama Dokgo Rewind alongside Sehun and showed she could carry an action-driven story. She didn't go for likable roles by default. She preferred complex characters that moved away from her public image as a youthful idol.
In 2019, she played Jung Soo-min in Hotel del Luna. The role changed how the public saw her, because her character carried a demanding subplot with fantasy and dramatic undertones. She worked under the direction of Oh Choong-hwan and shared scenes with IU in one of the most expensive productions of that period.
Korean critics praised her restrained performances. Mi-na avoided the excessive gesturing so common among actors who come from K-pop. Her technique relied on her gaze and her control of silence.
There was no turning back.
In 2021, she took on a bigger challenge in the historical drama Moonshine. Playing Han Ae-jin required her to master archaic speech and the physical constraints of traditional Korean costumes. She won the Best New Actress award at the 2022 KBS Drama Awards for this role. That award confirmed that the industry no longer saw her as a singer who acts, but as a fully fledged professional actress.
In 2023, she decided to leave Jellyfish Entertainment after seven years under contract. She signed with Story J Company to focus exclusively on her acting career and pursue more substantial film projects. The agency represents some major names in the industry, which made it easier for her to land roles in productions with more mature themes.
In 2023, she appeared in the series Welcome to Samdal-ri as the younger sister of the lead character. It was a supporting role with an emotional weight centered on young motherhood and family sacrifice. She shot most of her scenes on Jeju Island under changing weather conditions that affected the original production schedule.
Her film debut came with You Did Great! in 2023. The movie was shot on a tight budget and aimed for a raw tone about today's youth. Mi-na accepted the role without reading the full script, trusting the technical crew.
Her next big-screen project is scheduled for mid-2024. Her current agency contract includes exclusivity clauses for scripted television projects on global platforms. The shoot for her latest 2023 series lasted exactly 165 days.
