Kristine DeBell began her career posing for Helmut Newton's camera. In 1974 she appeared on the cover of Playboy, which opened the door to an industry looking for fresh faces with clear erotic appeal. But her first major breakthrough came with a risky bet that nearly ended her chances in mainstream film.
In 1976, she starred in the musical version of Alice in Wonderland. The film was rated X and mixed the classic tale with explicit sex scenes that would be unthinkable today for an actress aiming for Hollywood. Despite the controversy, the film was a massive box office hit that earned more than 90 million dollars at the time.
The stigma of softcore pornography was hard to shake.
But her luck changed when Ivan Reitman spotted her for a project that would define 1980s comedy. In 1979, she landed the role of Wendy in Meatballs. Sharing the screen with Bill Murray helped her shed her image and prove she could keep up with improvisation on a chaotic and fun shoot.
The industry began to see her as more than an adult magazine model. After the success of the summer camp films, offers for very different kinds of roles started to arrive. In 1978 she shot Paradise Alley under Sylvester Stallone (in his directorial debut), and shortly afterward she found herself in an international action production.
In 1980 she traveled to Texas to shoot The Big Brawl alongside Jackie Chan. It was the first serious foray into the American market for the Chinese actor, and DeBell played Nancy, the main character's love interest. In just four years, she went from neighborhood theaters with red curtains to major martial arts productions financed by Warner Bros.
It was her biggest paycheck to date.
Despite these peaks in popularity, DeBell's career settled into a steady but quieter phase. During the 1980s and 1990s, she turned to television with appearances in shows such as Night Court and The Young and the Restless. Film studios began looking for different profiles, and she preferred the stability of weekly paychecks on the small screen.
Many actors of her generation dropped off the map after the turn of the century. But she kept going by taking small roles in independent productions that valued her cult status. In 2015, she appeared in the horror film Hunter, and in 2016, she joined the cast of Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love for NBC.
Nostalgia is a powerful engine in the entertainment market. In 2023, she appeared on the show The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs to discuss her debut in Alice in Wonderland, which nearly ended her career early. She admitted there that much of her pay from that production went straight toward covering the bills for her move to Los Angeles.
The actress lives away from the spotlight and devotes part of her time to breeding and training competition horses. In 2024, the actors' union recorded her last professional appearance, a low-budget short film shot in California with a Blackmagic Pocket 6K camera.
