The hundred-million phenomenon

Krithi Shetty was born in Bombay in 2003 and grew up in a Tulu-speaking family before the cameras of Tollywood discovered her. By age 17, she was already carrying a multimillion-dollar production on her shoulders. Her entry into the industry was anything but gradual.

In 2021, the film Uppena grossed more than one hundred million rupees over its opening weekend. Shetty played Bebamma, and audiences connected with her in a way box office analysts did not predict. That romantic drama put her on the map overnight.

And the industry responded with a flood of contracts.

During that same period, she juggled filming with her psychology studies. But the pace of work in Hyderabad left her barely any time for textbooks. The Indian studio system rarely forgives shooting schedules of sixteen hours a day.

The Saturation of the Telugu Market

She signed three projects in quick succession after her first breakthrough. In 2021, she shared the screen with Nani in Shyam Singha Roy, and shortly after she appeared in Bangarraju. Directors were counting on her face to help sell tickets in rural areas.

But her run of commercial luck came to a halt in 2022 with titles such as The Warriorr and Macherla Niyojakavargam. Critics pointed out that the scripts were repetitive and that her image risked burning out from overexposure. The actress suffered three box office flops in less than twelve months due to mediocre scripts.

In 2023, she starred in Custody opposite Naga Chaitanya.

It was her first attempt to break into the Tamil market at the same time. The film received a decent technical reception but did not reach the box office numbers of her earlier films. So her agency changed strategy to look for roles with greater dramatic weight.

New territories and genre cinema

By 2024, her strategy shifted toward productions with bigger technical budgets and ensemble casts. She appeared in Manamey alongside Sharwanand, aiming to win back lost ground in light drama. Shooting Vaa Vaathiyaare marked her definitive bet on Chennai cinema instead of focusing only on audiences in Andhra Pradesh.

She accepted a role in Genie, drawn in by the visual effects and a budget that exceeded the usual standards of her previous work. The actress commands over 20 million rupees per project, according to industry audits in 2024.

And the gamble paid off.

Her contract for the film Sanjeevani includes specific clauses on international distribution across streaming platforms. Filming wrapped three weeks behind schedule due to problems in sound post-production.
