In the spring of 2006, a fictional campaign by the agency Tiempo BBDO for MTV released a satirical song that crashed the first internet video servers. The music video for Amo a Laura featured a girl in a skirt below the knee and a cardboard guitar. Few knew back then that this journalism student was named Lara Álvarez and that a real studio was waiting for her just around the corner.
Nieves Herrero gave her a break at Telemadrid when she was barely 19 years old, on the magazine show Hoy por ti. There she learned the street-level craft, without technical filters or the comforts of a big star. Before any national spotlight, she had to pound the pavement in local newsrooms at TeleAsturias and find her footing on the specialty channel Animax.
Sports served as her training ground. In 2010, she landed the late-night slots on Marca TV, hosting Marca gol and Tiramillas, shows where the teleprompter often failed and she had to improvise second-division soccer results at breakneck speed.
La Sexta wasted no time recruiting her for its sports block, before she hosted the New Year's Eve broadcast that same year. Mediaset saw potential in her on-screen appeal and signed her in 2011 for Qué quieres que te diga, an afternoon counterpart to current affairs magazine shows that was pulled from the schedule after only a few weeks on air due to its dismal ratings.
Nothing is handed to you in the director's booth.
That early setback did not stop her from landing on the MotoGP World Championship broadcast team during 2012. There she learned to work amid the deafening roar of the asphalt in her headphones, mic in hand and dodging mechanics in the pit lane. But in February 2013, the network abruptly decided to part ways with her and overhaul the team.
So she picked up her notes and jumped to Atresmedia to share the desk with Josep Pedrerol on Jugones. She also appeared in the late-night comedy En el aire with Andreu Buenafuente and logged plenty of live morning hours on Espejo público.
In 2015, Mediaset came knocking again with a transatlantic plane ticket in hand. The offer was to head to the Cayos Cochinos in Honduras to host Supervivientes on location, the most profitable and demanding format of the Italian group in Spain.
Eight consecutive seasons spent three months a year in extreme humidity. She hosted more than two hundred live broadcasts through tropical downpours while managing dehydrated contestants, physical endurance challenges and constant satellite link failures. Her role left no room for hesitation or timing errors with the main studio in Madrid.
But the wear and tear takes its toll.
At the end of 2022, she decided not to return to the Honduran beach. The network tried to capitalize on her profile in closed-set formats such as Pesadilla en El Paraíso, Me resbala and the music contest A tu bola. None of these shows managed to win over late-night audiences.
In February 2024, Lara Álvarez announced the voluntary end of her long-term contract with Mediaset and exited in style after a decade on the payroll.
And television waits for no one.
In June 2024, RTVE announced she would host La conexión, an adaptation of the Dutch format The Connection produced by Satisfaction Iberia. It was a quiz show bet built entirely on augmented reality technology and precisely timed editing.
Away from the spotlight of the public broadcaster, she began teaching training courses for TV reporters and speakers. She studied neuroscience applied to verbal communication in order to teach professionals how to overcome stage fright in front of the red light of the studio camera.
In 2026, she broke away from her traditional role as a presenter by joining as a permanent contestant in the seventh season of The Edge on Antena 3. Filming for the format required physical routines of up to twelve hours a day and underwater breath-holding tests that exceeded three minutes of static immersion.
