Costume as Armor

Lark Voorhies joined the cast of Good Morning, Miss Bliss in 1988 at just fourteen years old. She wasn't the lead, but her screen presence set the pace of the scenes. Producers quickly noticed that this teenager from Tennessee had a magnetism that jumped off the screen. So when the project evolved into Saved by the Bell in 1989, she was one of the few original cast members to survive the transition.

Lisa Turtle wasn't just the rich girl at Bayside High. Voorhies built a character who used fashion as a defensive barrier and a language of her own. Over eighty-six episodes, she maintained a delicate balance between physical comedy and the dignity of a Black teenager in a mostly white environment. She made her character the only one with a consistent style arc during the four seasons of the original series.

And the gamble paid off.

But typecasting set in before she finished filming the last episode in 1993. Hollywood often punishes those who find massive success as teenagers. Voorhies tried to break that pattern right away. She turned down roles that would replicate Lisa Turtle, seeking refuge in the most demanding television drama of the era.

A Refuge in Daily Drama

In 1993, she joined the cast of Days of Our Lives. The pace of filming a daily soap is brutal for actors, since it requires memorizing up to thirty pages of dialogue a day. She played Wendy Reardon with a composure that surprised critics who had only seen her in lightweight comedy.

Television is a business of interchangeable faces.

She appeared on The Bold and the Beautiful in 1995, where she took on the role of Jasmine Despres. On that shoot, Voorhies showed that her acting technique relied on restraint. She didn't need grand gestures to dominate the frame. She signed a long-term contract that gave her financial stability but kept her away from big-budget films during the second half of the 1990s.

She appeared in music videos for artists such as Boyz II Men and Montell Jordan. These brief appearances kept her image tied to a very specific aesthetic of American pop culture. She tried to move into production with her own company in 2001, but the projects couldn't secure the necessary funding in a market that was beginning to change due to digital piracy.

Writing and a Quiet Return

Voorhies intermittently stepped away from the spotlight to focus on writing. Between 2010 and 2011, she independently published three books under the titles Reciprocity, Trek of the Tycoons and True Light. These are dense, complex works that explore human psychology from a very personal perspective. She sold thousands of copies without support from major publishers, relying solely on her loyal fan base.

It was a purely technical decision.

Her mental health became a tabloid talking point after some erratic public appearances. Her mother confirmed in 2012 that the actress was dealing with a mental health disorder. This led Voorhies to become much more selective about her media appearances. She preferred silence to giving free exposure on gossip shows that exploited the fascination with the former fallen star.

In 2020, she returned for the special of the new version of Saved by the Bell, produced for the Peacock streaming platform. Her initial absence from the project's announcements sparked a massive fan protest on social media. In the end, the writers created a storyline for her in which Lisa Turtle was a successful designer based in Paris. Filming her cameo took less than eight hours at a studio in Los Angeles under strict health protocols.

The production of the series relaunch in 2021 did not feature her physical presence in every episode due to scheduling and health reasons. Voorhies currently lives in California, away from the industry's usual casting circuits. Her most recent credited appearance in a fiction production was a minor role in the series The Chosen Ones, filmed in 2024.
